97 explorer 4.0 sohc 4wd

As indicated I have a 97 explorer 4.0 sohc. My 4wd will not disengage. It will go from 4 high to 4 low and back with no problem. Just will not disengage completly. I had to remove the front drive shaft. Just to have 2 wheel drive. Any suggestions?

I would have the GEM tested (easily done with ForScan diagnostic software), also when in 4AUTO get a voltage reading on the brown wire entering the transfer case, should have less than 1V DC at zero duty cycle. If all that checks out you may want to get inside the transfer case and check the clutch pack.
