I am currently looking for a front and rear driver side doors for my 1997 explorer xlt. I am not having much luck finding any 97 year models in the local salvage yards, and due to the economy and me being a construction worker wondering if Im gonna still be working next week or not, cant bring myself to pay what other part companies are asking for their doors. My question is can anyone tell me what other year models can a swap out doors with? and is it possible to use mountaineer doors? and any info or tips on the process of swapping the doors would be greatly appreciated.

In case you are want to know what happened.....

A few weeks ago, while driving on west bound on I40 in Memphis, TN traffic was medium and rolling about 70 nascar style. I was in the fast lane, and there was a car broke down on the shoulder. and a small nobody company tow truck(with no lights or anything on) rolled past me on my right in the middle lane, and passes the car in front of me, suddenly jumping in front of the car in front of me, and slamming on his brakes(trying to get to the car on the shoulder). The car in front of me went side ways, and I wasnt stopping fast enough to not hit them, I couldnt bail out to my right due to traffic, and there was a car broke down on my shoulder, so I was S.O.L there. I lucked out, and was at a spot where the police normaly hide between the interestates sorta in the ditch between the east bound and west bound. I managed to miss all the cars, miss the cable, the guard rail, and the sign all on my side, and not flip the explorer, but conscidering I hit a grassy muddy ditch at about 70 I did slide into the back side of the guard rail on the east bound side. I did not total my truck, and It still drives perfect, but I did tear the Hell out of both of my doors, running board, and rear fender, and bent my bumper a little bit, and busted my rim. So two new doors and a running board will have it looking not perfect but 85% better. and no the tow truck never even tried to offer me help or ask if I was ok.

I used the doors off a 1992 Explorer when i fixed my 1998 Explorer was told that they wouldn`t fit.but changed the mouldings and weather strips around windows and couldn`t tell the differance from 98 doors. Hope this helps. Ron
P.S Mountaineer doors are the same.

1991-1997 doors will bolt on, Electrical connections are different on 1991-1994 ( Gen 1). 1995-1997 have similar wiring. I believe if you use Gen 1 doors,
You will have to modify the opening where the wires go through the door to the hinge post on the door itself. If you have keyless entry, stick with a Gen 2 door with keyless entry. I am not sure if 1998- 2000 doors will work.

MY FIRST POST on explorer forums... i used to be a part of another forum 1000+ posts a few years back, but it was with MBworld.

I have a simular question...

I have a GOLD 2000 XLT... i purchased a few weeks ago for 1,800 off CL... damaged.

Needs a FRONT LEFT FENDER and a FRONT LEFT DOOR... has minor dents in both... (and a big scratch that goes all the way to the rear)

I also found a GOLD Explorer 1997 (non eddie) $75 each... i did a search on this forum, and I see that there may have been a change in 1998? What is the diff between 1st Gen and 2nd Gen (i am assuming 91-94 is first and 95-01 is second?)

So my question is... will a 1997 fender and drivers door fit (wiring and mounting) will it look as it is supposed to? Are the GOLDS the same color?

I took the car to a body shop and they quoted me $1150 to fix the damage.

any input is greatly appreciated!

Hey man, Im a little late on the reply...but I took your advice and found a front and back door, I paid 100.00 for both, dude even helped me put the back one on, and wo uld have the front but he said the glass was broken in it, and since I was a cpl hours from home and it was getting a little late, I waited. I have a good friend whose town I passed threw on my way home, who happens to do auto windows for a living. Anyways turned out the windows were rivited, and he left his rivit gun at work. So he was gonna come to my place the next evening and we'd swap the window from my damaged door to the new door and then install it. well my damaged door started sticking and right before I was about to leave his place, i found myself stuck in my truck. Im a big guy, and crawling over the console wasnt easy for me, lol. So we decided no window was better than being stuck in the truck. After finally getting the bottom bolt started and getting the door on. I drove about an hour at 10:00pm t0 11pm doing 55mph-80mph and it was about 55 degrees outside, not counting the wind blowing in the window. Well when I get home, i check the lock and window buttons just to make sure they were all working, and I accidently hit the front driver side (the one with the broken window.) and the damn window rolled up. It was even tinted the same tint as my other front window. I couldnt help but laugh. I will say this, there was broken glass all in the other explorer, and even fell out of that door. Now after riding around for a month or so with a green truck, and maroon doors. I have gotten the doors painted. Counting what I paid for the doors and materials to paint the doors, and 100 to my buddy for painting the doors, im out about 400.00 now I still gotta fix the back fender, and bend my bumper back, then i think im gonna paint it fiji pearl blue, and get some rims. btw for a quart of the oem paint, which was jewel green, cost 85.00 by itself. On ebay, I can get a gallon of fiji blue pearl for 130.00 and that includes clear coat, reducer, the paint, and shipping and handling. My upper and lower billet grills should be here today, I got a make over planned. Hopefully in the next month or so, it'll be done and I'll have pix. Anyways I didnt plan on this being so long. I just wanted to say thanks for the advice, it really helped me out!!!

Does anyone think you can swap a 98-01 tailgate into a 95-97??

yes, as long as you swap the tail lights with it;)

Sweet now all i gotta do is locate one....and get new lights

im not sure if you have a pull a part near you, but the ones here in memphis, are packed with explorers. If thats not an option, try craigslist.com that is where I got both of my driver side doors. I had to paint them, but I only paid 100.00 for both doors.....key, pad, working motors, switches, windows, etc..... Good Luck Friend!

found one at a yard for 250 everything + lights are included...just gotta get that paycheck
