Please don't flame me for this but I am stumped...

Friend lost his keys so he replaced the ignition switch with new one from parts store....

The explorer will not start so he had the fuel pump replaced (his idea and not my work)....explorer will still not start

Disconnected fuel lines and fuel pump will prime but not run while trying to crank...

Did some research and found that it has something to do with the anti-theft system...

Had a reputable locksmith come out and he cut two ford keys with transponders but he could not get the system to recognize the keys and he was using a handheld programer...

The locksmith looked under the dash and said something to the effect of I cannot do any programming until "this" is fixed but not being very specific...apparently there is a wiring issue or something broken...

I have not had time to look into the problem any further b/c of school but I will be checking it out tomorrow morning....are there any modules/sensors/wire looms that I should suspect in and around the area of the driver side dash?????

Why not put the old one back in and have a dealer cut a key?

Because my friend has no sense....the first two sets of ignitions he lost the keys to and he does not have them because he tried busting them and starting with a screwdriver...

The ring around the ignition switch holds the receiver part. The key "talks" to it. If this was broken, oh boy!.:(:(:(:(

First you will need to get the receiver fixed. Then keys made to "talk" to it. Then the system will need to be reprogrammed. There is no way to bypass a non working PATS system.

Thanks....Today i just found that the "ring" was in fact broken....however there are a ton of salvage yards that should have the part....

One last question:

I need a list of all compatible vehicles that this part for my 97 can be cross-referenced with....

Today I looked at a 2001 sport track & the ring looked the same except that it connected under the dash somewhere with no plug on the ring itself..ie..on the 97 explorer the ring has a green connecter closer to the ignition lock....didn't want to dig to far into the dash at the local salvage yard as it was getting dark....

Jon, was PATS even used in a 97 Explorer? I own a 97, and habe wondered about this, because the stickies I've read here say it was not used until 98.

PS: My apologies for the hijack.

That's what I thought, might be a late 97? If not PATS then what would be causing all the trouble?

He has the receiver ring, so he must have PATS, and I agree that's the source of the no start. Just seems as though I've seen more than one thread with a 97 with PATS trouble. I would be interested in seeing a photo of his key.

I read the "all about PATS" again but am still unsure if the receiver ring from the 2001 explorer sport track will work with the 97 explorer???

I guess i will just find out tomorrow..
