97 Ranger Extended Cab
My 97 Ranger, 2.3 super cab has been idling rough lately. Sometimes I can turn it off and restart and it will be fine. I had to replace the a/c suction/discharge hose manifold last week, and I recharged the system. Now sometimes the ac sompressor short cycles and doesn't cool. I can turn the truck off and restart and everything is fine.
Is the problem my idle air valve?

woah okay first off your idle issue and AC issue are likely seperate.

The IAC does have alot to do with idle but nothing to do with AC.
For a stumbling idle th efirst thing to do is clean the MAS, and reset the PCM.

How long has it been since this thing had a tune up?

I had the plugs changed at 100,000 and it now has 168,000. I change the filters when recommended. It is ironic that the compressor works fine when the truck idles properly (ie. speeds up when the compressor cuts in).

what is the voltage at your battery + terminal with the truck at a warm idle?

This points to an electrical issue, battery cables, bad AC relay, charging system, etc.
