97 v8 tranny swap to 01 HELP

GangsterSinner (9:22:11 PM): hey
Glacier991 (9:19:49 PM): hi
GangsterSinner (9:23:24 PM): how are you?
Glacier991 (9:20:05 PM): I'm good thanks, you ?
GangsterSinner (9:23:38 PM): good
GangsterSinner (9:23:56 PM): if you remember i was putting the 01 tranny in the 97 explorer
Glacier991 (9:20:50 PM): Ah yes.
GangsterSinner (9:24:43 PM): well it seems to work but i have another problem
Glacier991 (9:21:21 PM): ok
GangsterSinner (9:25:14 PM): ok so the tranny is in and it goes foward and reverse but now it drives like **** it wont accelerate pase 1500 rpms and engine sounds like ****. many plugs were fouled up and i did a tune up replaced all plugs and wires same result. the truck wasnt like this before. there is a check engine light my friend will bring home his computer from work to diagnoss it. the friend that helped my said it my be an o2 sensor he noticed one was banged up a little. and yes the computer has been reset. does any one know what this is?
Glacier991 (9:23:27 PM): When you have this type of problem, it is usually either electrical in nature or it can be fuel (usually pressure) related.... Fuel pressure testing would be a good idea, you could have a bad Fuel pressure Regulator (FPR), but getting the code read would be helpful most likely.
Glacier991 (9:24:14 PM): there are a host of problems that might produce this result... so start with what the computer is telling you and work from there. You had a good start replacing plugs etc... the fact so many were fouled makes me "suspect" your FPR.
Glacier991 (9:24:44 PM): But suspicion is a bad way to diagnose when you may have a DTC (code) that is golden in terms of telling you what it is.
GangsterSinner (9:28:59 PM): oh and the o/d light keepsflashing
Glacier991 (9:27:09 PM): that means there is a tranny code stored

Have you gotten a code from the PCM yet?

i will get that tomorrow night and will be sure to let yall know asap. my friend that bringing the computer says it seems like the tranny is in safe mode like its riding in 3rd gear? i duno. hopefully its an easy fix to get it driving correctly atleast

Safe (limp) mode will also result in AWFUL bone jarring shifts.. it maxes out line pressures.

when i drove it around it took forever to get it up to 30 or 35 or so and then i seemed to me to have shifted gears. cuz the terrible noise softened a little bit but was still really bad and i got the same result when i would manually put it in 2nd

Ok here are all the codes swap looks like a complete failure. friends dads shop said tell him dont bring it here.

trans codes:

P0500 vss sig circuit failure (vehicle speed sensor)
B1352 Ignition key circuit failure
B1410 Driver pwr window mtr ckt failure

Engine codes:

P0712 Trans fluid temp sen circuit low input
P0743 tcc system electrical
p0750 shift sol "A" malf
p0755 shift sol "B" malf
P1000 OBDII monitor test/drive cycle not complete
p1747 pressure control solenoid "A" short circuit

Hmm, that sounds like a wiring issue with the transmission. Was the engine running fine before, and exactly how much of the wiring was disconnected?

Hopefully double checking the wiring will confirm everything easily for the engine. The trans codes make it appear that some wires are crossed going into the trans. Please go over those wires and confirm where they are supposed to go. Go back over which combination of wiring parts are on the truck. Don't drive it until much more is known about that wiring.

the only thing that changed on the harness that that 9pin to 7 pin that connects to the valve body. i am about to check the harness. i checked the wiring diagram twice when i did it. no the truck didnt drive like this before

Well having used the 97 DTRS, I'd guess that the 97 trans harness should be used with it. I don't know how those differ, the 97/2001 DTRS. How much trouble was it to remove and swap those wires around?

i checked the dtrs my friend called that the neutral safety switch. its easy access thes rest isnt but everything is connected. we first ran the truck w/o the dtrs cuz he broke the first one strapping it on the tranny jack. the truck ran the same with out the dtrs sensor and it cant be switched with the 01 cuz its different connections

Okay so you have another 96/97 DTRS then.

The wires going to the valve body needed to be swapped around inside the connector, did you do that like Section illustrated?

exactly as illustrated i checked it 2x

Wow it sounds like the wiring for the VB more than anything. The DTRS is for telling the PCM what selection the manual valve is in, not for actually sending signals to the trans. If it wasn't sensing the proper orientation of the manual valve, then the PCM might be confused by that.

Was there an adjustment range for the DTRS, such that it could be turned while loose, set to multiple locations? I wonder what the proper procedure is for installing the DTRS, check that.

The VB connection needs some verifying also, for those wires. Even if it's a matter of checking to be sure that the wire colors in the "diagram" match other diagrams or illustrations. Find and check the other link to the website showing great information for the 4R70W. The link was on the first page here. Write down the colors in each chart/diagram, and carefully compare the descriptions for all/each color of wire or terminal.

Hopefully this amounts to a typographical error in one of the charts etc. Do you have notes which you made to swap those wires? Go to them and make new notes/diagrams to confirm the locations of the terminals/colors. Regards,

yes i saved everything. the drts only mounts one way from what i can tell. i checked my papers and notes and i looked at sections diagram and saw where he combined the powerwires where mine are chillin in the 2 unused spots for the 01 rather than tie it off like that site said and i figured it would help prevent dirt from getting in the little holes over time. cuz one of the error codes was low input like not enough power maybe?

tomorrow i will try to get the truck off the ground and take a look at that harness for the vb its not easy to get to but i will try to verify luckly i noticed all the wire colors stay the same except for the power which becomes blue/orange

i hope this can get fixed this is way out of my league. i dont want to be scared of cars cuz this is how you learn but talk about your first car on your own and a big time headache

You could connect those together, I probably would have tried to found a way to also.

I wish I could help you more, messaging is like a 30sec conversation done over a day. I've been there with wiring issues many times. Hopefully someone else will read this and come up with a better place to look, or know what in the wiring is wrong. I can't imagine anything being amiss with the trans, just don't hurt it before you figure this out.

well not to say i wont get myself a little TNT and have a dynamite time :) hehe

I am going to suggest that you do what I suggested before:

"Ok.. you are ok with the newer VB...

You should stay with the old harness and solenoids."

Swap everything out for the old harness and solenoids.

do you think those solenoids will fit the internals are different. the 97 has wires all under the pan the 01 has a circuit board. its in that link you sent me before. i read back your say i am going to have to solder them on? hmm i hope that would work. i dont know what else to do other than one sink a lot of money in this so throw my hands up and get rid of it before i get in too deep that i cant get my money back that i am into it so far. i guess you could say i am in between a rock and a hard place. i started tonight taking apart the center console so i cant get to the manual shift panel in the floor so i can access the harness and connect those other 2 12+v wires together as a last resort before the solenoids. i cant access it from under the truck. i dont want to be negative but what if that doesnt work? i would probably get rid of it before i drop that tranny again unless a miracle happens
