98 Explorer It died at a stop sighn one day and i mean it just stopped cold. It starts fine goes into gear fine when cold but after warm up if touch throttle any other way than a feather touch it dies. After warm up if take it from drive to reverse it dies instantly try putting in any gear now and it dies starts fine Have to wait 45 min to an hour can fire it up goes into gear and drive away Altho touch the throttle slightly to hard to start moving, and it dies again starts fine but cant put it back into a gear that will move the vehicle again for 45 min to an hour again. If any one knows how to fix this please let me know this thing is cherry a 4x4 and id hate to have to trash it over this i mean come on do you reall believe ford motor co, has no idea considering so many people have the same problem? Ford was known to put filters like the one uner the intake manifold of my Fathers 90 lincoln Towncar that was only ever referd to in the ford Shop manual that only got distributed to dealers not a single mention of it in chultons or Hains repair manuals

We really need a video.

It could be an engine issue…or a transmission issue…like the torque converter locking up. The description just is not nearly enough to go by. How it behaves when it quits is going to tell much more of a story, and seeing it is a must.

Sounds like a fuel pump problem. Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
Scan for codes.
Check for live data - fuel trims

if you stop for gas or anything after its warmed up it wont go into gear at all put in reverse it dies instantly put it into drive it dies instantly wait 45 min to an hour start it up put in gear and drive away

Did you scan for codes?
The only Time, my engine, spotted cold at a stop light was when my AC compressor locked up.

"if you stop for gas or anything after its warmed up it wont go into gear at all put in reverse it dies"
What happens, if you put it I to neutral, and then try too start the engine? Does it start?

Does the check engine light turn on with key on and go off once engine is running?
Does check engine light remain constant?

Does check engine light flash while cranking?

Which engine is in your explorer?

OH YEAH IT STARTS FINE when you put it in any gear its dies instantly no sputtering or any thing just dies
if you wait about 45 min its will go into gear fine

i cant say off the top of my head but its a V6 and i never paid attention to the chek engine lite so i cant say

This Explorer was givin to me free its in really nice condition i drove it for 2 years without a problen till this its a v6 4x4 by the way

Can't troubleshoot without knowing.

So from your response its a transmission problem.
The transmission is lock.

Agreed.

Unless it’s running so horribly that the extra load of being in gear pushes it over the edge, orrrr there is some kind of freak electrical gremlin with the transmission range sensor (extremely unlikely), you have a problem with your transmission—like a possibly locked up torque converter, as mentioned earlier.

when i turn key to on check engine light comes on it goes out when starting no flashing and stays out when running i do however have to put gas pedal to the floor to get it to start.

To me it sounds like a fuel issue once you go from open loop to closed loop it could be as simple as a faulty MAF sensor or a fuel delivery issue personally it sounds like you're not getting enough fuel, have you done the basics like look at live data and check fuel pressure?

Monitor LTFT and STFT also check fuel pressure and check your engine coolant temp sensor reading in live data fully warmed up it should read around 90C to 95C I have seen them go bad and cause wacky issue such as this another thing to mention is if you have the 4.0 SOHC your fuel pressure should be 60-65 PSI also these engines were known for bad intake gaskets which in my case my 99 would stall out when warm due to a severe vacuum leak, last but not least if you have the SOHC engine there is a fuel pressure regulator on the driver side fuel rail it is located on the back side of the rail and it has a red vacuum line attached to it not often do I see them go bad but it is possible that it has gone bad, Hopefully this helps you start diagnosing

Also, after reading your previous responses about how it won't engage gears once warm it could possibly be a bad EPC and or TCC solenoid, how many miles are on this vehicle and how does the transmission fluid look? the 5R55E was known for bad valve body gaskets and the bracket for the EPC and TCC solenoid breaking there are revised parts out there for both issues from ford, I don't have enough experience on the internals of the 5R55E as I usually stick with working on the internals of engines such as the 4.0 SOHC and LS engines from General Motors but I am sure there are other members here that have tons of experience with the 5R55E and that could assist you better with diagnosing your transmission issue if you have any questions I will try my best to assist you with this as will other members here on the forum

ya know what thank you your the 1st person to even have an idea what it might be it has 256k on it and no vacume leaks and other than having to hold throttle wide open to start it it runs perfect except for having to really baby the throttle from a red light or stop sighn it will die if touch throttle even the slightest bit aggresivly in taking to a mechanic friend of mine to put it on the scope im gonna print this out and take it with me so he can check these out thanks again{ boy i miss my 1969 fairlane}

I had a coolant temperature sensor go bad.
It cause the car too start fine and when warm would not stay running and hard starting, when up to temp.
