you would need a 96 or 97 computer

They changed the VSS in '98.. same with fuel lines.. CMP is different too. You'd want a '96 or '97 computer too because in '98 they went to PATS (no fun).

You could actually use pretty much any year V8 Explorer as long as you get a 96 or 97 computer that matches the engine harness, EGR (internal or external), and tranny electronics. In '98 they also changed the internals of the trannies which is why I needed to make a custom harness.

So I did everything the hard way by using too new of equipment. :D

Ok, so I guess that one on eBay is no good... :(

So if I get a '97 donnor vehicle, then everything will work together? What if I didn't get a whole donnor, and just got the parts??? Will the remaining stuff on my chassis work with the 5.0 engine??

Yeah, as long as you stick to return style fuel system. I had to swap the fuel lines from my '96 on to my '99 because of that. I think thats pretty much the only difference chassis wise.

Just to make things easy I would go for all 96 or 97 parts. You'll also need a 5.0L radiator (any year), air intake tube, MAF, TB, tranny cooler and lines, uhmm... rear driveshaft, hmmm.... you'd probably want an V8 gem as well so your 4wd lights dont go crazy when you no longer have an electric shift t case...

Yeah, with all those parts needed, I think I'm going to look for a complete donnor vehicle. I think that it will make my life easier. Anyway, I really shoulden't do this until the spring or summer, so I have some time to look around.

So a 96 or 97 will have a return style fuel system? Yes, right? Also, are there any differences between the 96's and 97's that would make me favor one over the other?

All 96's had the GT40 heads with the enternal EGR. About 1/2 the '97s had that and the other half had GT40-P heads with external EGR. Supposedly, Ford claimed the P heads were worth 5 more HP and thats why the rating went from 210 in '96/97 to 215 in '98. Other than that the motors are identical.

cool. Now all I need is to find a  ;)

p.s. you don't still have your '96 5.0 engine??? :D

I have some of it. But it's out in the garage turning into a 331 stroker as we speak! :D

Still have espnfreak's stuff out there too. Haven't heard if its a done deal or not, yet...

yeah, he told me that he made a deal, but if it fell through I was next on line. Now if that does happen, I just need to figure how to get it all to NY :p

the 99's have a returnless fuel system and the 97 uses a return line to bring the unused fuel back into the tank

I'll be headed down to the junk yard tomorrow, they've got about 4-5 5.0 engines for me to look at. Fun day ahead :D

Have fun! I hope to do this some day when my 4.0L dies or I find myself rich all of a sudden. Since your truck is a '97 4x4 like mine, maybe I can learn something.

Well I didn't get down to the junk yard yet, but I'm still planning on making the trip. My preference is to get a rolling chassis with everything I need right there, but that may not be an option. So my question: What other "big" items should I look for at the junk yard besides the engine, tranny, and t-case?

Thanks.

Driveshaft(s), Radiator, exhaust (manifolds, cats).. uhm.. the V8 computer.. motor harness, tranny harness, I think asp84 brought the throttle cable to do espn's conversion.. MAF, air intake tube, etc, you might as well get the V8 GEM, oh.. the motor mounts! .... the tranny crossmember, V8s have stock traction bars you can grab too.

So it looks like the rolling chassis is the way to go...

On another note, I'm really starting to get into this idea. At first I was unsure, but now I'm real excited. I can see it now: 5.0, custom exhaust, apten chip, K&N... yeah

Yeah, and you really should put your supercharger on before the motor is in your truck. :D
