I was under the hood yesterday changing an indicator lamp and checking the oil etc. When I had finished I went to start the engine and while the starter turned over it would not fire. I thought it may have been a failsafe on the Compustar alarm system I had triggered. I have been in touch with their tech support and no luck. Am I missing something obvious ?? can any one help???
The vehicle was working fine earlier in the day.

You didn't lay your keys by a big magnet or EM device did you? You can kill the chip in the key itself. This will make the engine turn over but never fire.

I wouldnt have thought you could kill the key until it happened to me.

You could try using another key to start it.

No the key was in the ignition and turned on so I could check the indicator bulb I replaced was working

You need to determine if the problem is fuel or spark related. When you turn the key to the ON position, do you hear the fuel pump prime for a second or 2?

Maybe having the key in the "on" position you burned up a relay or something? Just a guess.
