99 ranger 4wd

i have a 99 ranger xlt 3.0liter man trans 4wd with auto hubs and switch on the dash. lately she wont go into 4wd high or low. the light will come on after a couple tries and i can here a click in the transfer case but it doesnt lock in. when i get the light on for 4wd low it changes the shift pattern but the front wheels arent locked. any help would be greatly appreciated

Same thing happened to me on my 98 B-3000 the last time we got dumped on. I got stuck in about 4 inches of snow and couldn't figure out why neither front wheel was spinning. I'm in the process of digging into my hub issues, but if you beat me to it, I'd appreciate some wisdom.
