OK, here is what happens...
the engine will start to bogg down like it is not getting any fuel. If I step on the gas it will hesitate and then be fine. This has happened at a full stop while in drive and just last night it did it while going about 40-45 on the highway.
Extra symptoms(sp)...
first time it did this the engine light started blinking and then went off. My idle has gone from about 700-900 down to 500-600.
Posible causes...
I sucked some water into my intake about three months ago, but after it dried out it ran fine. I have a K/N airfilter and when I "recharge" it I spray the oil on both sides and when I looked at my intake hose last night there is now a thin layer of K/N oil all down the pipe and on that little sensor that hangs down in the intake tube.
Posible remedies...
I have to change my starter out this weekend, so I am going to clean the K/N and only spray oil on the intake side this time. I am also going to wipe down the entire intake hose and throtle body (what should I use to clean the intake tube and throtle body???).
If anyone has any suggestions or advise please... feel free.

you could use a TB cleaner, like AMSOIL or GUNK just make sure its TB coating / O2 Safe...

pull the plugs and make sure there not rusted or anything..

also clean the MAF probly has oil on it too..

that's about all I can think of right now..

hope it helps...

I just re-read the cleaning/oiling instructions on K&N's site and they show (but do not say) to oil only on one side and let the oil wick into the cotton. Do multiple light applications, let some time to soak in, until afull red coat is visible. By oiling on both sides excess oil can be sucked in and coat the MAF sensor directly from the engine side of the filter. Just a thought.

Clean the MAS!

I thought the instructions made it perfectly clear to only oil the outside, never the inside. You probably sucked some oil onto your MAF sensor. Hopefully cleaning with throttlebody cleaner will clean it. If not, a new MAF sensor will probably be needed. Be sure and use the cleaner that is safe for coated throttlebodies and is O2 sensor safe. Your MAF sensor probably has some oil on the two wires and can't sense the proper amount of air going into your engine. You step on the gas pedal, the sensor doesn't see the extra air so it doesn't give it any more gas, or something along those lines.

Thanks for all the info guys... should I just clean the part of the MAF that sticks down in the air intake hose, or should I do the MAF cleaning that is described on the FAQ page? I was looking at the MAF last night and it has those funky star screws with a little peg in the middle. Where do I get a tool to unscrew those? Lastly, all I do as far as the cleaner is spray it on and then wait for it to dry and then wipe it off right??

I'd do the cleaning described on the FAQ page, you can get the screwdriver from a hardware store, just make sure it has a hole in the middle for the bump in the screw.. I think the size it T-15

take the intake tube off and sprey the inside out as good as you can.

as far as the TB goes I rev the engine to about 1500rpm and spray in short bursts..making sure not to kill the engine...

If it is not the TB find this thread....

Engine Stalling on 2000 XLS???

I had a similar problem, and it eventually got worse. It turned out that the crank sensor was cracked. You can follow the whole story in the above thread.

Be careful when you spray the MAF too. Don't get to close to the wires. They are very fragile. If you get too close, you could blast the wires off. If you do, there is no fixing it. Just keep back about a foot or so until you see how hard the spray comes out of the can. Also, if you can't find the security torx bit driver, you can break the little pin off the screws with some needle nose pliers. Then you can just use a standard torx driver.

Thanks alot guys... I have the whole intake tube from the box cover to the end and am whiping it out... I am also recleaning the K/N and am only going to oil the intake this time. I have to drive to IA tomarrow and that is where I am putting the new starter in at so I will do the MAF there too. By the way throttle mouth?? has no oil on it and looks clean as the day I bought it.

Update...

I wiped the whole intake tube down and cleaned the throtle body with Throtle body cleaner. I also had the plugs and plug wires replaced.
Part of the problem is gone... when I would rev the engine and then let off real fast the rpms would drop like a rock and kill the engine... it doesn't do that anymore. I now slows down at about 1000-1500 and drops slow after that. The idle problem is still there... it jumps around and trys to die. I went to three different autoparts stores and can't find and throtle body cleaner that says it is O2 safe. If there any thing else I can use?? Oh yea, I can't take the MAS apart... one of the star screws has solder over it so you can't open it. I can see the filaments hanging down inside the throtle body and can spray/wip them from there.

I couldn't find any information indicating whether or not you had ONP 00M12 performed (intake manifold o-rings). If they are leaking, it will cause a jumpy idle, especially when the engine is cold. It's free at Ford.

YUP, got that done with the cam belt one... it really don't matter is the engine is warm or not, it likes to do it all the time. It is something I guess I am going to have to live with until I have the money for a new MAS or I find that cleaner.:(
Torrie at FordPartsNetwork said $103 + $75 core charge for a new MAF.

I have had the same problems...

I have sohc 4.0 and installed k&n...did not think about maf trouble . I was thinking about the reported ignition system probs ...

The search is on for sensor safe cleaner!!!

keep us posted ...

I found some cleaner last night and cleaned the filament by spraying them where they hang down inside the MAF housing. The problem is alot better, but not totally gone... I am at a lose I guess the next step is to take it in and see what the Ford tech tells me. One thing I did notice is that when I have the heater on floor or off it don't do it???

an MAF on a 99 really shouldnt be dirty.
I've pulled mine apart on my 97 with 52000 miles and it was spotless. its something else. Im still battling with something similar but without any stalling. If you can pull no codes etc with an OBD2 scanner then Id say it needs the recall on the manifold o-rings AGAIN.

good luck

It will be if you oil both sides of a K&N filter. You probably have a stock filter or only oil the correct side hence your MAF is spotless. SplashMan oiled both sides of his air filter which would definately cause the MAF to become contaminated.

Yea, me dumb... me not reed d-I-rec-ti-ons correctly:confused:
I also have got alot of mud/water/sand/dirt in my air box from the 9 wheelin trips I took this year...
I started a new thread on this because I think my A/C has something to do with it now.
