A Modest proposal for those 5R55E Owners - EPC Solenoid Replacement Proposal

Glad I was able to help identify and groom a suitable group of test subjects for BW.

Will you have both the green & red EPC solenoids for testing? Is it possible to get both or is there a limit on the amount of vehicles one person could test? What about the solenoids integrated into a solenoid block? Would you have blocks for testing?

We didn't benchmark as many of the green filtered parts as we did the later version [just one], but based on the similarity of its performance to the others, our expectation is that the solenoid we've developed should replace both the red and green filtered OE solenoids. If you'd like to receive two solenoids so that you can try one in both applications, I would definitely support that. Just let the fleet test coordinator know you'd like to do it and we'll give him the OK from our side.

As far as the solenoid blocks go, that would be a much larger endeavor than just a single plug-in solenoid. It's not totally out of the question, but for now we've got a few other programs in front of us that look like more urgent opportunities.

So this is a universal replacement for the 4R/5R? If this is the case, could you point out the difference between the older green one, and newer red one which are usually not interchangeable? The older one is twice the price of the new one for some strange reason. I think the new one has inductive signature, but I'm not sure if the older one has this.

Well, the proof may be in your pudding, so to speak, but the differences between the big old green filtered part and the smaller newer red filtered part seem mostly to be in the size and resistance/inductance of the coil. Based on the newer vehicles having logic to check the inductive signature of the solenoid, putting the older part in one of these might have triggered a CEL, but I wouldn't expect the newer part to have caused issues if it were used in place of the old green part.

Just now, I checked the inductive signatures of a red filter part, a green filter part, and one of our parts. When voltage is applied to the BW part or the red filter part, there is a reasonably smooth increase in the current flow through the coil with just a small hiccup when the armature actually moves. With the old green filter part, the current rises to what looks like a max value, but then takes a sharp dip at about 60msec indicating that its armature's movement occurs much later and with significantly more interruption to current flow. Putting one of these into a vehicle that is looking for a signature similar to the red filter part would very likely set a trouble code.

Has anyone out there tried using a red filter part in place of the green filter part? If so, how did it go?

FYI: We have 7 participants for a total of 8 vehicles so far. The fleet test coordinator should be sending an e-mail confirming their selection and with our survey form attached. We are shooting for a total of 15 vehicles, so anyone still interested, please send an e-mail per the notice on page 11.

It might be a good idea to create another thread, a fresh thread to request more participants. A lot of members likely recognize this thread as old, and may be skipping reading the latest posts. Regards,

Now that you mention it, 12 pages is a lot to read through to find out this is still a go. I'll start a fresh one.

Thanks.

I received my EPC solenoid today. I already have a house project that I have to finish this weekend, so I'm hoping to get it installed the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'm also contemplating replacing the valve body gasket at the same time. I probably won't do a shift kit or any other mods so that I can see if there is any difference in shift feel with the BW solenoid.

I will try to post pics as time allows in another thread.

count me in have worked for ford for 25 years and seen it all I will be a test dummy I do hava a 4r though

I received the new solenoid a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, we have pretty much lived at the hospital the last couple of weeks due to a sick baby but I am hoping to find time by mid next week to get it installed.

I would like it help test this new EPC I'm curently enjoying the 2nd-3rd gear shift flair

oh thanks

I just joined today and came across this thread. This is the main problem that I'm having with my Sport Trac and have already located the part on my tranny. Let me know if you need another test rat for this cause I'm all for it and willing to participate. I'm having this 2-3 flair and the transmission was re-built before I bought it. Fortunately, I rode with the co-owner(one of my friends) to have it rebuilt so I know it was done. (The only other concern with the truck is why the RPM meter operates eradictally and sticks at times). Just let me know if you could use me for this.

Thanks,

GO DAWGS!!! (SWEET AS SUGAR!!)
