It appears that my pump has gone crazy.

It seem to not want to turn off.

You know that hum you hear for a few seconds after you turn the key.

Well mine stays humming and I think it's flooding and causing me to have trouble starting.

Took me forever to get the X started today.

So what could be the issue ?

Many thanks.

I would guess a stuck relay... if it stays closed, the fuel pump would keep getting power, and so would continue running.

As far as starting, if your truck is anything like the new trucks, you should be able to put the accelerator to the floor and then start the truck if it won't start normally -- doing that starts the engine without the fuel pump coming on immediately, so that the engine can start if it's flooded.

A fuel pump runs the entire time your engine is running, not just the few secs after you turn the key to run. The fuel pressure regulator regulates the pressure, and the computer determines when to fire the injectors so a running fuel pump should not affect engine starts. If you still hear the pump after the engine is off then the fuel pump relay maybe sticking ON..

Is the FPR the thing with the red button ?

Also would a crappy gas cap screw with the pump.

My rubber seal on mine is all cracked and busted up.

The fuel pressure regulator is on the engine, see pic for location on a OHV. This is not your problem. If the red button is on the switch at the passenger's feet, that is the inertia switch; also not your problem.

The pump should come on for about two seconds when you turn the key to run, not start. This pressurizes the system. When the key is turned to start the computer senses the engine spinning turns on the fuel pump and enables the spark system and the afore mentioned injectors.

If the pump does not turn off in run, the problem is most likely the fuel pump relay as previously mentioned. A reasonably good schematic can be found at:

You want figure 26.
