Hello everyone! Another mechanical neophyte here looking for help and service from this awesome community. I have a huge problem but great confidence that I will be able to fix this problem using the advance and details that some of you users may be giving out.

My problem you may ask? My problem is that I must entirely remove my Explorer's engine. I already have some of the basic stuff in my head written down. Such as something to lift or hold the engine once the mounting braces have been loosened and I'm going to have to disconnect everything from the engine.
Reason I'm removing it is because I'm trying to learn from first hand experience on how to fix things on my car for knowledge gain and because I'm going to do an entire engine rebuild to ensure that my car is working okay.

I've never pulled an engine in my entire life and I'm quite glad to say I think that with the appreciated help provided here I will be able to endure my endeavors and get my baby working again. Friday is when I will have the AC discharged so for now I'm looking on how to get the basic things done. Example, what should I start with? Where do I end? What are some major helpful hints that will keep my safe! Thanks for your time in reading and posting!

I will keep this this post updated incase anyone wants to follow the work i will be doing and i will take alot of photos.

nice!! ive never pulled a motor completly out, but its basicly unplug, mark, remove, fix, reinstall where marked. Make sure to mark EVERYTHING with little notes on how to remove and reinstall it just incase you forget. write down what you do step by step, so reinstallation is a BREEZEEEEEE. Good luck. May your x be resurected!

Yeah it wont to hard for ya. like mentioned just label your stuff incase you forget and try moving wires out of the way so when you pull the motor you dont accidently rip a wire out, Make sure you got a good engine crane and when you pull the motor DO NOT sit it on concrete it can draw moisture to the oil pan. Just start from the top and go down, it would be helpful if you go to an autoparts store (Napa, Advance Auto, Auto Zone etc) go to one of them places and buy a Haynes Manual for 91-01 Ford Explorer/Navajo/Mountaineer. <--This Can be quite handy if you get stuck and your to greasy to get on the computer to ask someone on here. Good luck with it.

I was reading up that i cannot pull the transmission out with the engine so how would i got about disconnecting the engine from the trans that is my main concern i have no idea how to do this  and yeah i dont have anything to pull the engine out im going shopping for one friday or sunday im shure if i invest in a good crane it is still cheaper then paying someone to pull the engine. (hopefully)

Just take the bellhousing bolts out when you get under there you will see bolts going from the transmission into the rear of the motor. I'm not sure of how many bolts there is tho, I'll try and look in my haynes manual quick and see if it says.

thanks sounds simple :D any recomendation on how high i want to have it sitting off the ground and what type of stands i need.

remove the starter to access the torque converter nuts (through starter hole)--don't forget those--

you will get one at a time-you'll need to rotate the engine by hand to get each one--

Do you have a business called cummins tool near you?

they should have a good deal on a engine hoist --seems I got mine with an engine stand for 200 bux.

advice
taks lots of digital pictures--every time you remove an item take a picture and name it--
It may seem like a hassle, but it will save you time in the long run. have a clean pair of vinyl gloves to protect your camera and computer--

i dont much about pullin an engine but mark all your wires get them wrong an it becomes a giant headache .

Anybody know where I can find an engine to fit my 91 Eddie ????

Ebay/junkyard ? no idea lol but shouldent you be starting your own thread for this?

jtsmith i see you know alot about this :D was checking out what you did to your ride im guessing im going to need to releave the fuel preshure allso to pull the engine so im guessing i could disable the fuelpump with the reset switch and then run it till it dies.
So i dont have to have the explorer off the ground for this project?

Here is one part of it Going to get the other for ya

:D Thanks alot for evryones help and to think i dident even start yet.
so... friday im going to get the ac discharged and thats all i can do because i have alot of things to do friday but saturday i will start working on disconnecting stuff and sunday i will go shop for a engine puller :salute:

No one has any complete information on how hard it is to drop in a 5.0 v8 sohc ? i searched the forums but evryone says something diferent and i read on here about a guy that had his truck at the mecanic for around 2 years just to do the swap whats up with that.

cant i just buy the engine off ebay then buy whatever ells i need? why would it have to be from the same truck as the engine arent all parts the same

ok well i went to 3 diferent AC shops and they all said to discharge it my self ... basicly they asked me what year and i said 97 so there like just release the cap on whatever side and let the preshure out  so i guess im going to have to do it my self. anyone have more information about how i releave the AC preshure

Well first off be very carefull of NOT to inhale any of it. Some people when they take their compressor off the just slowly take the line out of the back of the compressor and it will release but REMEMBER it is under highpressure so watch yourself. That is the only way I know to tell you to discharge it to discharge it fast. otherwise you could take the cap off the a/c line and press down on the little pin in there like you would to release air out of a tire.

hmm so you mean they basicly told me to push down on the pin to release it im guessing that will take forever and i run the risk to inhale it. would a simple filtered mask work since it is releasing slowlly?

Umm...I honestly am not sure, I'm not going to tell you its ok and you get ill or kill yourself from breathing it in....The only thing I know to tell you is take breaths hold it and release til you start gettin short of fresh air and then walk away from the vehicle and keep doing it, I can't believe the shops would tell you that tho because it is dangerous to Ozone layer I thought and also thought it was illegal.

well one shop did say they would do it for me and for free but it is allso illegal to drive without a inspection sticker $500 fine plus towing fees and 1 day in jail here ... :D and im not planning on inspecting it till im done fixing it  but heck that wouldent stop me from driving it down there without sticker the main problem is he said he cant do it till next friday and thats a long time from now i want to get started already so basicly then he said well do it your self just dont let anyone see you doing it, and yeah the other shops just said to do it.
