husky, if you read my reply throughly you will see that you do in fact need FLOW. If you toss on a 3 inch pipe straight back the exhaust gasses flow slowly but freely. What you want is freely but quickly. Thats the art part to custom exhaust. If you dont believe me I have an offer. 4 dyno runs, we can use my X or yours. One with stock exhaust, one wide open, and one my way. Loser pays for the dyno time
 






Isn't that the same thing as backpressure then? You're opening the exhaust more, which lowers the backpressure and slows the flow as you say.
 






No, this is where everyone gets the misconception. many are even tought this the wrong way. Backpressure is created by restrictions, like cats, mufflers, nasty kink bends, etc. if you re read my post about the straw and pvc pipe you will inderstand flow. the tricky part arises when you remove things like cats then you mess with the flow and must re balance it somehow. Often done with a slightly smaller pipe, adding a tiny bit of weld on the tip, etc. Its all a balancing act trying to get the most flow and least backpressure.
 






this is the pic of the muffler i bought so all i should have to do is take it to a shop and tell them i want dual pipes out the back, size 2.50 and thats it right?

Yeah thats the idea. Go to a few shops though. You will find some that say you cant do dual pipes on an explorer, :rolleyes: they are just incompetant. Some may charge you a fortune, Shop around a little. ask to see some of that shops custom work. If there are any kinks in the bends or creases go somewhere else. If the welds are anything but beautifal go somewhere else.

Backpressure: Residual pressure opposing the free flow of a gas or liquid, as in a pipe or an exhaust system.

You're telling me that adding a smaller pipe IS NOT increasing back pressure?

Rookie, honestly I really don't see where you have proved your point yet and frankly, your theories don't really make sense. From what I have gathered, your optimum setup would be a straight 2" pipe. :rolleyes:
 






Sorry, I just assumed that anyone that would even try to debate me on exhaust would atleast understand what scavenging is and how it works. If you dont understand that much dont waste anyones time. My "theories" are actualy infact common knoledge by those that are in the top of their field, IE find me a f1 tech that disagrees. Uhm, there isnt one. again anyone that wants to I will happily prove this on a dyno as i have before. loser pays for the dyno time.
 






Sorry, I still don't get it, but you probably know more than me about the subject. I've been thinking about dual exhaust (true duals, 2 mufflers) but worried about the power loss. What size pipe would you recommend? Should it be same size all around or just smaller tail?
 






I would definately run same size pipe all the way through. 2 inch perhaps. and definately a good cat on each pipe. If done well you will gain not lose
