A question for all exhaust owners

Hi my name is Jamie and I am an exhaust owner :)

hahaha

Muffler choice is preference.
run a 2.5" single exhaust from the cat back and you will be happy.
You might even stick with 2.25" from the cat to the muffler, the 4.0L wants a little backpressure.

I was reccomended to get a resonator and flowmaster muffler, quite but nice sounding. I think im going to go for that this summer if i get the money...

ditch the resonators.......
run a single cat instead of the multiple pre heater, cat resonator assemblies, keep it simple.
Singe cat, single in and out 2.5" muffler

I ran a 2.75" cat for an extra little flow....
JBA headers into a custom Y pipe (conversion piece, for most th estock Y pipe or headed supplied Y pipe works fine.
2.5" pipe from Y pipe to cat, about 8" long. 2.75 cat elcheapo, 2.5" pipe out to the singe in single out 2.5" muffler, 2.5" out the back.

hey guys i have a 95 4 door xlt and i want dual exhaust, so what i was thinking was, the flowmaster original 40 series muffler, single in/dual out, and if i buy that can i just take that and have a exhaust shop, install dual pipes coming out the back on both sides of my hitch, will this be a good setup? THANKS

and is there anything else i will need to know about doing these setup is it basically like i described

A good setup yes, a very popular one too.
Just dont expect to go rock climbing with tailpipes cooming out under your rear bumper :)

yea just a lil mud, no rock lol:), THANKS

if its only to the pumpkin it wont pass inspection has to be out to the bumper since its a SUV thats what the state inspection guy said when he failed me now i gotta re run my exhaust

what do you think i should put on my 91 xlt 4.0 for the exhaust. i want it to sound nice and look good too. i go trail riding but not hardcore i like to keep the trails easy cause i gotta use my rig for work till i get my berretta running again

I got dual chamber 2 flowmasters I believe I got 70 series big block II Mufflers
cause thats what it says on the flowmaster website.

I paid 490 bucks for mine to get installed so I am guessing I have the 70 series but not to sure.

i run magnaflows and they sound awesome on my v6 4.0 explorer

they were only 100$ too

what do yall think would be cheaper? To go ahead and order the flowmaster 40 muffler and take that to a shop and have them do the rest, or would it be cheaper to go to the shop and have them buy the muffler and do the rest ?

Buy the muffler! the shop will probably charge you retail for the muffler which is around (depending) 100$ but you can get it for about 60$ on ebay.com ofcourse all shops are different you can always ask.

The explorers exhaust doesnt come out at the bumper stock. atleast not on the first gen it doesnt. And PA state inspection does Not require the exhaust to come out that far back. In fact the law states that it must exit behind the rear wheels. You may have it exit from the side as long as its behind the wheels. PA inspection also breaks several of its own rules if something is " as stock"

the 4.0L wants a little backpressure.
410, PM me if you wanna discuss the difference between backpressure and flow. In reality backpressure is the enemy of even the 4 litre. I am just tired of explaining it on here as no one seems to want to listen to someone that made custom exhausts for years and went to school for it

Wanna know why nobody listens? Because you're wrong. Many engines require some backpressure for optimum performance.

uhm, no.

This is the problem with this board. Too many people think they know more than everyone else with out knowing anything about the person they are questioning. Too many people think that because they were taught something one way that it MUST be correct. I have real world experience in what I claim

super common misconception. the problem is when you open the exhaust too much the exhaust gasses flow more slowly. THink about a soda straw and a piece of 3 inch pvc. if you flow the same amount of water you must flow the water through the smaller pipe WAY faster. Well when you are really an open exhaust the gasses flow slowly. This will lessen the scavenging effect you need. scavenging is your friend, backpressure is not. I have taken countless courses on this and have made exhausts that are coveted by people for hundreds of miles. I have done everything from huge trucks to a porsche gt2. dont tel lme I am wrong about something that I have more experience in than you will ever understand. Many of the vehicles I have done have been dynoed afterwords. NONE of the dyno tests showed any loss at any RPM. atleast none that I got to see. This includes 2 rangers with 4.0 ohv/s and one explorer with an sohc.

is this the flowmaster 40 series muffler that i should buy for the setup i want CLICK THIS

Yeah, you can.

Rookie, so the definite decrease in acceleration when I pull of my tailpipe and put on my test pipe is all in my mind? How about I throw on 3" pipe. I'll have a gain there also?
