I have a 93 explorer 4x4 with the infamous a4ld in it. It was having alot of problem going into first gear, I would have to rev it up high, then it would go in. Eventually it quit moving forward at all. I had reverse but no forward gears. I looked in all the sticky posts here and checked a few other posts and found some info on where to start looking, pressure checks and such. When I looked at the vacum tree there was transmission fluid and I had noticed some smoke when starting up. I pulled the vacum line loose from the modulator and the truck would move forward again just like it was supposed to. Obviously it will not shift if I leave it unplugged so I need to replace it. How likely is it that the modulator is all that is wrong with this?

I replaced the modulator and it worked for a while now it does the same thing reverse only no
Forward gears. Disconnecting the modulator doesn't help.

I replaced the rubber lines and blew out the steel line with compressed air. I wiped out the bore with a rag. Should I use something like a bore brush for a rifle bore to clean the area where the pin goes?

You could use it if it's not too abrasive. These tube brushes are good: http://www.explorerforum.com/reviewpost/showproduct.php/product/377/cat/19

Took it all back down, squirted carb cleaner down the steel line, blew it out with compressed air. Cleaned the bore out with a wire brush, and replaced everything. Same as before. So I went to the junkyard today and all they had was two wheel drive trannies, and my truck is 4x4. I know that the transfer case will not bolt up to the 4x2 tranny. So, here is my question. Can I just leave the transfer case off, get a 4x2 driveshaft, disconnect and remove all the other driveshafts, or is there more to a 4x2 conversion?

You could convert it into a regular RWD without a problem. It's possible to convert the transmission into a 4WD set up if you open it up, and swap the tail shaft. This is basically like rebuilding the transmission since everything has to be removed, and reinstalled.
