AC Compressor is toast

Hey guys... I started my X this morning and it quit right away. Tried a second time and it ran for 5 seconds and stalled again. Third try, I reved it up to 2000 RPMs and it ran ok for a little then the RPMs dropped 3-400 and I saw smoke coming out from the hood. I shut the engine off, opened the hood and saw the smoke coming from the AC clutch area. I disconnected the electrical connection near the top of the compressor and it runs ok now. No smoke, no noise, no vibration. Will the disconnected clutch electrics cause me any issues till next spring when I plan on getting the AC fixed??

I wouldn't think it would be a problem leaving it disconnected. The ac does kick on when the front window defroster is on so it may take longer to defog / defrost the window. You may also want to cover the plug with something to prevent moisture getting in the connector and causing problems later.

Opinions: is there any chance this is just an AC clutch problem?? Sure would be cheaper. But my luck couldn’t be that good. Right?

Maybe! On another post it was discovered finding just the clutch is pretty much impossible. You have to buy the whole unit.

Based on your description, no its not the clutch. If it were a clutch problem, disconnecting the connector would not have made a difference. I would say your compressor is seized. The smoke was from your accessory belt melting due to trying to turn the compressor. You may want to check your belt, it may be damaged....
