driving on normal auto control track setting, when i give my X alot of gas from a standstill i hear a series of loud clunking noise from the front. the noise gets louder the more gas i give it, the sound is violent enough that the thud is felt throughtout the whole cabin. the noise dies down as the my X picks up speed.

driving through deep snow this past weekend on 4wd i noticed that the sound also appeared as i climbed up steep hills at about 20-40 mph.

to me it feels like a component in the front drivetrain is slipping as more power is routed to the front wheels.

Yikes!

Any of you IFS guys help this guy out?
Ball joints? CV axles? Torshion bar retainers?

Do the CV's look word or possibly broken. Can you grab the shaft and try to move it around?

Only thing I can think to check now.

I hear some noise when I take off in 4WD from my front wheels but I contribute that to the CV engaging.

The CV could be on its way out but not to worry because if it is on the way out it will let you know. They tend not to knock too long and the alternative is the 1/2 shaft sitting down towards the ground. Take a look at the grease boots for the CV joints. If you find a tear or even if they have a small hole in them there will be a spray of grease from the boot.
