In an effort to slow the miles accumulation on my Exy I bought a 91 Taurus SHO today. Host of issues but all it all seems pretty decent. I'm making a full inventory of all issues tomorrow when I get off work.

Wish me luck!

if it's a manual trans i would suggest changing out the unreliable cable shifter linkage with the rods from a newer SHO. i believe they were changed in late 92 models.

the sho's will always be one of my favorite cars ever made, congrats on aquiring one, looking forward to pics

Welcome to the SHO.

Awesome daily, now how about some pictures!!!!!!!!

Jeff - :navajo:

Definately post some pics I have two SHOs right now and i love them.

that looks like a nice car fo' sho

I successfully weaned myself off the SHO's, after owning 9 of them. I couldn't stop! :D

I'd suggest rod bearings if it hasn't been done... That's the one weak point in the Yamahammer that can end the fun very quickly...

One more vehicle to scratch off my list of want to own someday! I don't know what it is but there's something very attractive about the SHO. It's quirky and has character.

Cosmetically, the worst damage is the clearcoat is peeling BAD. Sheets coing off. And the 18" ricer rims on the driver's side and donut spares on the passenger. I'm going to get some regular 15's off a junkyard Taurus to get me going, they charge $60 for a set of tires/wheels here. There was a badly wrecked SHO there too with the slicers but two were destroyed. :(

Mechanically, it doesn't need much. There's an annoying heat shield rattle and a check engine light that comes and goes I need to look into. The motor itself purrs like a tiger, I really wanted to open it up on the way home but with the donuts I didn't dare.

It's supposed to have 200k on it and 100 on the newer motor. New clutch and new brakes. It's that red color that 50% of Fords were that era. Leather interior and power everything, automatic climate control. :D Half the locks are not working and the windows are reeeeeaaaalllly slow. :P

Absolutely filthy inside, disgusting. I can't want for a thorough detail.

Pics and complete list if issues forthcoming!

Well it was too dark when I got home to get much accomplished, but I did get the wheels changed out and headlight bulb replaced.

Two questions today:

How do you get that crappy DIY window tint film off? It's all bubbled and looks terrible.

Also, why would all the window motors work so slow? Are they really all bad or do I have a wiring problem causing a voltage drop? They move about 1/4 the speed of normal.

I'll get better shots in daylight but for now:

Nice looking SHO I haven't had a Gen 1 yet but I am looking. As for the window motors I am willing to bet they are on there out but before you decide to replace them I would check the voltage going to them first. It would be a little unusual four all for to be slow. My rear windows are always slow and that's with new window motors too.

sweet ride fo sho =p

Clean the motors- I've seen grit and dust slow them down like that.

Seems like 90% of Ford cars back in the day were the same red. :)

This was my '91- same color. Cool history- when I bought my car, the seller was on an internship from Germany with Ford. He bought it from them- from Ford Motor Company proper, 3 years before. He had the old title, and Carfax confirmed it- it was a Ford pool car, since 1991, for well over 10 years! It was a running joke at Rotunda, and even my Dad remembered it being around when he was working at Purchasing in the early 90's. The guys there somehow kept covering it up upon renewal, to keep it in the pipeline. It even made it's way to the test track the day I got it, to say goodbye one last time, before it went on my car hauler to head to Grand Rapids. ;)

They're great cars- my '92 was the first car I ever had car payments on. I loved that car.

My '91 was the next-to-last SHO I had. I cleaned the s**t out of that car. I went through 3 Harbor Freight rotary buffers, a few gallons of Meguiars compounds, and weeks of tinkering. But, it was my only 1st Gen, and I wanted to do it right.

The day I picked it up:

I think we need a SHOOff thread. :D

Side windows:
When I did mine on my Paseo, I removed the door panels, and used lots of Windex and razor blades. The film peeled off, but left the adhesive. I sprayed that with Windex, let it sit for 20 seconds or so. The Windex would turn the adhesive into a gummy mess. Multiple hits with Windex and razor blade, with paper towels to wipe, finally cleared it off. I left the door panels off for the tint install also, so that he could tint well below the door panel edge, and to avoid any problems or dirt from trying to tint behind the door panel top edge.

Rear window with defroster lines:
I had my tint installer remove it. I was going to do it, but he said that he could not guarantee his work if I did it, due to whatever I did not completely remove. He used a steamer, with garbage bags to make an enclosed area. Search online for more info on that.

i miss the crap out of my 91 mtx!

Joe Dirt - That's an amazing job you did, I seriously need to learn how to do that. Every car I own or have owned has had paint issues. I can usually get them better than how I bought them but never back to that new look.

toypaseo - Thanks, but dammit that's gonna be some work. Know of a tint removal fairy?

Withhold comments on how it looks until after I get some good pictures up. It was pitch black when I took those and my flash could only do so much, all the defects are hidden. The peeling clear looks truly awful and some of it has been left so long I doubt the paint can be brought back there.

And now I need to turn the thing inside out to be sure there aren't any drugs stashed anywhere, I found something under the center console that makes me wonder.

Thanks- it was a ton of work... I had to replace the interior as well.

If the clear is peeled on yours, you can most of the time polish the paint up pretty good with a rotary and some compound, at least to respectable. I'd suggest hitting up the meguiars forum, there are some great detailers, and the Meg's techs are on there all the time. You may be able to polish it out yet!

Little better pic. Also I've since changed the grill out to matching red and fixed the wipers so they "park" properly.

An easier way to do it is to get Simple Green (or something similar), spray it on, cover with trash bag, sit in hot sun for about an hour, then go peel off. May still have to do some scraping to get some goo off but near as bad. This is how my tint woman does it along with a friend of ours who has done tint for years. Hope it helps.
