adjust your TPS (another free hp mod)

Thanks for the advice on the screws... I will attempt to get it done again soon.

I just did my TBS and what a PITA. Those metal sleaves weren't meant to come out! After drilling and drilling, lots of blood (literally), plier pulling, they came out. Now that the plastic is soooo thin around the screws, I used some washers for support.
My wires are all grey with different color stripes and the middle wire was the feed wire. I set it to .965-.966 so we'll see if it does anything at all. I hope it does since the original reading was 1.14
If not my little cuts from the metal sleave shrapnel will heal eventually

i did mine today, unfortunately mine was .93 stock ( i was hopin it was way off so i could get more improvement. i set mine to .97. didnt have to drill at all, i found that i could adjust it all the way up to 1.12 without drilling, just loosen the screws, turn it a little, and tighten the screws and recheck. if yours is only slightly off try this, alot easier then drilling, took all of 3 minutes.

thanks james!

hmm i got 1.01, might work the same for me, thanks tac0meat and james, and anyone else contributing to this thread.

Well heres my findings on the adjustment.
From 1.14 down to .955 made a noticeable difference in smoother idle and acceleration. It is not faster by any means, just noticeably smoother! I put on the BBK TB a week earlier and believe it or not, the TBS adjustment is more noticeable for normal street driving. My TBS wouldn't get under 1.09 without drilling so drilling it was. Try adjusting without drilling first!
MPG this tank for sure won't be better because my foot is in it more. Next tank we'll see, but hey its a truck not a MPG friendly car!:D

Guys maybe I am slow or something, but I took off the tps then I go to check it on my 5.0, and I don't see where to tap the wires, I have green orange and black coming off the tps, now where do I tap the dmm, I know I need to touch the green wire, but where? which connection do I tap?
thanks
Brian

Donald, you have to backprobe the connectors. Meaning you stick the probe of the voltmeter in between the wire and the insulation until you get a reading.

So should I splice into the wire?

and then when done, cover the splice with eletrical tape?

No don't splice the wire. Once you push the probe in far enough you will reach the metal of the connector and you will get a reading. The "insulation" I'm talking about is the rubber stuff that keeps water from getting inside the connector.

Jason,

Thanks man, I feel like an idiot. I did it, adjusted to .97 and the idle is better than before. I can't really tell on throttle response, but I hope it helps on mpg. But if it only helps on idle then thats a plus. Thank you.
Brian

Ok,
Just got back from a long trip. TPS set to .97, cleaned MAFS, new plugs, new fuel filter, new IAC valve, new IATS, new stock air filter with big holes added in air box.
Air conditioning on most of the time, high altitude driving from sea level up to 9,900 feet, up and down, fully loaded (dogs included).
It ran like a wet puppy with hip displacia going uphill at high altitude.
Sea level runs like a bomb. Shifting a little better.
MPG ranged from 18 to 22, averaged 19.5 mpg.

No different from last trip before all the new stuff.

I think unloaded with air conditioning off, running at sea level, on a high speed flat highway, I would get another 1 or 2 mpg now with the changes.

I believe drilling the holes in the air box, and new filter, was the most effective change.

FYI

i did it today, i will post with any mileage improvements later this week. i have kept track of every fill up since i've had this truck, and i usually average low 14's to mid 15's mpg. my initial measurement was about .99, but i got it down to exactly .96.

karlito...try using a 5/16 drill bit, and you should be all set. just keep your drill level and you should be fine.

dumb question

Hey everyone, I know this might sound dumb but to "adjust" the sensor what actually do you do (to change the multimeter readings) do you just turn the top of the sensor and screw it back on? I have a 94 but I assume it is all the sameon the 2nd gens. I really want to see if this will improve my trucks idle. Thanks in advance!
mike

94XMike, to "adjust" the sensor means that you are just kind of pivoting the sensor. If you loosen the screws that hold the sensor in place you will see that the sensor can pivot a little. If you need more, you can drill out the holes (just a little) that the mounting screws go through so that you can pivot or twist the sensor even more. This change in the oritentation of the sensor alters the voltage reading. I know that was a little long winded, but I hope it helps.

I would sugest you check and set your "Curb Idle" before you do this MOD. On the 4.0 you need to set it at 675rpm. To do this, make sure the engine is warm, unplug the IAC valve, then crank it up. 98% of the 4.0L will not run, meaning they need to be set.

After you do that then readjust your TPS, it'll make a big difference.

What you are doing is resetting the WOT. When the computer thinks it's at WOT, it will turn off the A/C & alternator field, and down shift the tranny if you have an automatic. This MOD does not give you any Hp, it just re-assaigns what is currently being used on other things.

I've did this on several FORD cars & trucks. When I do this on other peoples cars, I ask them what did they notice after the test drive. I don't tell them what to expect. This is what they say:
"That was the best MOD for the money"-he paid for dinner.
"It feels smoother, and pulls me better"-from a girl in a SHO.
"Just call me 'Stompy'"-from a guy in Canada about his Sport Trac I did.

Well after having this mod for a few weeks I haven't noticed any gains.

I am getting around 220 miles to a tank. And my idle is rough.

Did you check your Idle?

Do you have a 5-speed or Automatic? If you have a 5spd, then you may not feel any improvement. The only thing would be if your on the expressway and you want to pass some one without down-shifting, then you would know the air-conditioner compressor has cutoff and now the air is getting warmer.

Funmobile, that's good advice about setting the throttle stop screw first. This keeps the IAC within it's duty cycle range (32-38%), and will help it to last longer. A lot of idle problems can be fixed by simply adjusting this screw.

Moving the throttle stop screw will also change the TPS voltage, so all these adjustments must be done in sequence.

What is the "curb idle" for a V8 X? If you can get me that info I would appreciate it. But after adjusting only the TPS and a tank of gas later I still have a nice smooth idle with good acceleration (also due in part because of the throttle cable mod). This last tank also gave me 340 miles, or 16 mpg. Not bad for a V8 AWD.:D
