adjust your TPS (another free hp mod)

I'm getting a a reading of like -3.74 on the 20V DCA section. This doesn't seem remotely right. What the hell am I doing wrong.

How do you test the voltage when the connector is connected to the TPS? I don't understand why the voltage changes when you pivot the TPS around. How does that increase or decrease the voltage? I basically tried to do this for about an hour and I got no where, and I'm pretty pissed off that I can't accomplish something so easy.

When I do it, I use paper clips and slide them along the wire untill it touches the connector. Since your getting 3.74v means you need to switch to the other outside wire but keep the middle wire connected. When you look for the voltage in the plug, the middle wire is one you need and depending one which other wire you select you'll either get .9v or 3.7v. It sounds like you've got the idea but you need the other wire.

When your adjusting it, your useing the "Play" to calibrate the sensor. Just a slight bit twist will change the voltage on the sensor. After you get it done, you will have changed your WOT(Wide Open Throttle) position.

Don't forget to disconnect the Battery when your done.
 






in other words your probably measuring the wrong thing, let alone putting the voltmeter tester wires on the wrong wires (- to +, + to -, instead of + to +, - to -).

Well I finally figured it out and I was at 1.10 before the mod. I got it right at .96v. I noticed a pretty good improvement in throttle response, my truck is not nearly as sluggish. I'm hoping it'll increase my milage!

Oh, and for you OHV guys, drilling out the sleeves should give you enough adjustment. You shouldn't need to drill anymore material out.

Thanks for the tip James.:cool: I found this thread earlier today and I went out and adjusted mine and I have noticed better throttle response. Mine was reading 1.2V and I got it right at .96V without even having to drill out the screw holes. (which I was very happy to find) Thanks again my Sport Trac isn't hesitating like it was. If anyone has any other little tricks be sure to let us know!!
 






Wow, great tip. It took me a total of about 20 minutes and now the X drives like a different vehicle, much more driver friendly. It was at .84 volts when I first checked, by just loosening the screws I could get it to .91 and by oblonging the holes in the sleeves a bit with a small round file its right on .96 now. Thats the kind of tips I like, same as my women, cheap and easy!
 






in curiosity spawned by this thread, i took my fluke meter out to the garage and probed the green wire.

to my amazement it read EXACTLY .959 volts, not even enough to mess around with.

when I connect to the black wire and the greenstriped wire i get like 4 volts. when it connect to green stripped and to ground I get .96 volts what the deal.
 






Green striped is Ground, the other is the black one is the wrong one for this test.
 






it seems as though Ford used 50 billion different wire colors for the TPS over the years. just ground the test probe, and probe the other wires until you get something that reads .6-1.5 volts. :)
 






Try the middle wire first. It's usually the TPS signal wire.
 






You are checking the voltage differential between the middle wire and one of the other two wires. You have two choices. One choice will give you something around 4v DC, the other will give you something around 1v DC. That's the wire combination you need no matter what color it is. You are trying to re-calibrate it to .96-.98v which is just under 1v.
 






hey, when i took out the screws on my TPS to oblong the holes, I noticed a problem. On my tps,there is metal things around where you put the screws in. I dont know how to describe it.....but, when you look at it, there is the screw hole, and on the area that you are supposed to oblong, there is metal. like someone made the holes bigger, and stuck pieces of metal with holes down the middle in the holes where the screws go. SO, im unable to oblong it, because i cant take away the plastic material. anyone else have this problem?

I think the metal sleeve comes in all year and model. That's why you need to drill the hole bigger.
 






The metal sleeves are there so that the plastic housing won't crush when you tighten it down. If you drill out the sleeves completely go easy when you tighten it. I drilled mine out just enough to get the .96volts and the sleeve is still there, although a lot thinner but at least there's some support.

If you read all the post above you would have read how I adjusted mine with the steel sleeves. You will need a small round file. I just filed out the round hole into a bit of an oblong to make the adjustment, it dosn't take much, maybe 5-10 minutes of filing on each side.
