adjust your TPS (another free hp mod)

I have a '96 4.0 EFI OHV, 5spd. don't have much experience, besides I just bought it. Bottom line is I'm not sure where the TPS is located. Can anybody help me or post a picture, for this specific engine model.

by the way, gas mileage is terrible 13.5 mpg at best. I'll post my results on the mpg as soon as I have the info.

thanks

it's on the drivers side of the front of the trottle body.

sorry, i have no cam to take pics but it is on the drivers side of the throttle body(front of intake), across from where the throttle cable linkage assembly is on the passenger side of the throttle body. you'll be able to see the throttle butterfly (what the tps is measuring the position of) between them in the throttle bore if you have the air intake hose off. the sensor has three wires.

soltero,
go back to page 10, there are directions with-in the links.

Thanks amigos,

Found the TPS, drilled the holes bigger. But the reading was 3.96 (middle wire, the one supposed to be .96V) and 5.06 (the other wire).

The middle wire gives a 3.80 reading when not attached to the TPS, the other wire gives the same (5.06 V )reading.

The Voltmeter was set to 20 V. If set to 2V the reading was 1 (obsviously, becasue the measured item had voltage over the 2V setting).

So, what does this 3.96 reading mean and how do I lower it to .96 V? I tried adjusting it but it only ranges from 3.90 to 4.06. Didn't do anything else since I noticed this (voltage) was not right.

By the way, I tried to different voltemeters and have good batteries, same results with both.

you should have the voltmeter set to 2v or 1v. There are three wires which translates into three different ways to connect your voltmeter to (Thats wire to wire, do not ground to car). Do this until you have a reading of just over or under 1volt with key in the on position.

soltero,
somehow you didn't do it correctly. You should never have a reading over 5v.
The TPS stays connected the whole time and with the key turned to on, you tap into the middle wire and one of the other two. One will give you about 4.1v while the other wire will give you .9v. That will be the one you want.

Amigos,

First of all.... Merry Christmas!!

I'm sure Something is wrong here. But I can't figure outwhat I did wrong. I tried all posible wire combinations and got the results shown on my last post.

The Voltmeter set at 20 VDC should display the reading correctly as well as the 2 VDC setting.

I will do this again tomorrow and will follow everything step by step, and try to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for your patience.

Make sure you have 1 on ground, like a piece of metal on the car.

I finally did it , but I'm not convinced that I did it right.

To get the reading in the middle wire below 1.5V I had to use a metal part (AC compressor) as Ground. I was 1.1V and got it right on .96V

The strange thing is that the reading on the orange wire (the one supposed to be 4V - 5V) was lower than the voltage on the middle wire .05V using the same metal part as ground. But using the ground wire on the TPS gives me the 5.06V reading

my throtle response was bad B4, we'll see if it improves once I get on the highway.

james t,

I just got a 2004 Explorer XLT Sport Package 4x4 and will take a look and see what is under my hood as far as the TPS goes. I'll take some digital pics.

But your right on, this does make a differance. My past experiance was with a 2001 Yamaha FZ1 motorcycle and they make it so that you can adjust the TPS by matching it to the RPM reading you get. This made a big differance in how the bike ran...so I assume it would be the same in a car/suv or whatever has an TPS.

To check my reading I will use a Fluke 8060 True RMS Multimeter...yes, I have cool toys...lol

Hope to post the results soon with pictures. I love free mods. :-)

So I finally got a digital multimeter and did it. My tps was at like 101 or so. I changed it to 96.6. The only thing i really noticed was it started a lot quicker but that was about it. I will see after a tank to see if the gas milage has changed.

Modette,

Did you ever check you 04 X to see if this mod can be done on it? I have an 03 and would like to give it a try, but want to make sure it will work on our generation of X... Thanks...;)

holy crap

wow, after reading this tip or mod i borrowed the meter from work and went home to try this. i first made sure the iac was set up ok then checked my readings on the tps...i was getting about .85. managed to get it to read .955 without having to drill or anything. started her up and here is what i have noticed,
my erratic rough idle.....GONE !!
hesitation........GONE !!
responce........WOW!! is all i can say
as for mileage.......To soon to notice..but keeping my fingers crossed.

thanks for the tip. i will reccommend this to anyone.
keep purring

Just wanted to mention

If you take a voltage reading with the ground reference someplace other than the common wire of the TPS, your readings are worthless. Measurments from an engine part may be convenient if you are wanting to check the tracking of the sensor for spike. However, there can be an electrical offset between the engine block and sensor common of up to 0.2 volts. If you don't use the sensor common, you will be comparing apples and oranges.

i went out and bought a multimeter. I checked it against a battery and it gave me 1.32. This leads me to believe it is off by about .18

I checked my truck and i get .969 to .970, so even if it is off by the .18 i am still good

You know batteries arent exactly perfect either. But your car should be fine where it is at.

help!!!!! my truck sensor has 3 wires brown, grey, red w/ tgrey?? i think... when i put my volt metter to it (red plug to grey wire and black plug to red/grey) i got a reading of .65-.66 (truck not running but key on?? help pleasse i need to no b/c my truck is all torn apart lol thnaks latter!!

You need to test your car when it just has the key in w/ power, not ideling or wot.
