Okay so FINALLY located & bought a low mileage 5r55e trans for my 99 Ex Sport 4x4 OHV. They are in short order here (everywhere snicker snicker) so I paid a hefty $500 for a used one. It is from an SOHC of the same year 4x4 Explorer - I have been told there should be no hang-ups as long as it is the same year.

So far I ordered a Remote Trans Fluid Filter from Summit. What else should I do to get the most outta my new/used tranny.. Ditch the OEM cooler for larger - which vehicles should I eyeball? just wanted to get some advice to get as much outta it as possible.

Thanks in advance gang!

I would upgrade the valve body or get a rebuilt one to start fresh. Add a drain plug and keep clean fluid in it...maybe a remote filter too.

Sean and Wrechted, Thanks for the input! My laptop is dead so I am borrowing my sisters.... I have a rebuilt (w/ all updates) VB I will be putting on my new-ish 5r55e. I am still trying to locate a AO dealer... I am still trying to find out which large cap oil cooler to use...

Thanks,
Mike

Get the biggest you can fit if you use it for anything other than driving around town. I had a bookmark for an RV sized one I was going to get but I lost all my bookmarks :(

Just got my new Remote Tranny Filter. Still looking for a larger cooler..

Found the one I want to get. It's really really big and it uses threaded fittings, which means I'll be able to use braided lines really easy. I had some issues for the first 3k miles or so with my rubber lines loosening up, though it seems to have stopped now.

Edit: The reason I want this huge one is because I currently have a cooler about half that size but during a day of wheeling my trans temps got up to 250 and above at some points.

Inh,
I will be adding that to my X-mas wishlist! Nice price too!
