As much as I love the retro green LED display, I'd like to upgrade to something a bit more modern.

Can I continue to use the CD changer in the glove box? I guess if I buy something new, it might be a moot point because I'd be using bluetooth and my iPhone.

Also regarding the steering wheel controls, any recommendations on a good kit that will adapt?

When the green LED display on mine went out last year I put in a JVC double din touch screen DVD player. It is probably the best thing (other than the BFG AT's) that I have done to the truck. I also use an i-Phone(4s) and have an Apple i-Phone video cable leading to the glove box. I plug my i-phone to it and leave the phone in the glove box while driving. The unit has hands free calling, displays a GPS app from the phone while driving, and plays music/video from the phone. It also has a detachable face plate to prevent theft and keep your LCD display away from the cold of night (and day:)).There are other brands with different bells and whistles to check out and I highly recomend this type of setup.

I do not have steering wheel controls but the manual says that there is a cable available to connect it. As for the cd changer in the console, I made a post here asking how to remove it...and have. It is nice having the extra space in the console to keep our toques and gloves in while driving and the rear seat heat that runs through it keeps them nice and toasty for when we get out. I don't think that there is even a disc in the head unit as everything just comes from the phone now.

I bought it just before Christmas last year and got the unit on sale and they had a half-price install promotion and had them do it. I did have to pay for an install kit on top of that but it fits and looks great. I could look up what kit it was if you need it.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about a JVC.

So did you have to deal with the subwoofer? I wonder if that's powered by the head unit or a separate amp somewhere in the vehicle.

the 2000 Mountaineer i bought last week has an aftermarket CD/DVD player installed in it (a Jensen 9413 i think). i also have the stock Ford HU. i would reinstall the stock HU except the display is out and, from what i've read, fixing it is hit or miss. i miss the convienience of using the steering wheel controls and the 6-disk CD changer, but the Jensen unit sounds pretty good and i like the pop-up display screen. my grandson will enjoy watching his movies i'm sure. while the owner's manual says the Jensen HU will work with some brands of CD changers, Ford's isn't one of them. i don't think there's any way of having the steering wheel control an aftermarket HU.
