Here's my idea. I have a KKM and I'm getting some pinging because I'm pretty sure that its because it's taking in hot air. I have a 92 so there is a lot more room on the drivers side of the engine compartment, I was thinking of relocating the air filter to over on that side. Using an PVC elbo right outside the throttle body and then running a piece of PVC down a few inches and just sticking the filter on it there. The I can use some ductwork below the bumper to guide some air up to where the filter is, maybe enclosing the filter if needed. This will hopefully eliminate my pinging.

why not just leave the filter where it is and run some pvc or other tubing/piping from a cold air source, and have the cold air dumped out right in front of the KKM? thats what just about everyone else does, and im planning on doing it too in a few weeks.

I don't know about the newer Explorers but it is really crowded on the passenger side. There is almost no room to run any tubing beside the stock location.

i managed to run a flexible 3" stove pipe into the end of the filter and then down below the bumper to get some cool air, works pretty well.

I'm also interested in getting more cold air to my KKM intake. Has anyone here tried to insulate the filter from hot air around the engine? Here's what I was thinking: get some furnace duct insulation (it looks like 1" thick fiberglass insulation with aluminum foil on one side. Wrap this in more aluminum foil to keep fiberglass out of your filter (and hands!). Wrap this over the KKM so the backside and top are insulated from the engine. I figure this would be better than the top of the stock airbox that I got rid of when I got the KKM. Cold air comes from the stock intake at the bottom of the stock airbox. More if you modify it for bigger intake (i.e. the 3" dryer hose intake). Any flaws with this idea??

P.S. Anyone with a KKM on a 4L SOHC try going thru Colorado emissions testing? I'm wondering if you need to go back to the stock box/filter to pass? I heard you do, as KKM bypasses smog equipt., but is that true for the SOHC, or just OHV?

What do you think the intake air temperature is?

While in traffic I would take a good guess at probably engine temp. Our X's run around 180-200 deg so I'd say the ambient air temp in the engine compartment is close to that, but I don't think it would actually get that hot. On the other hand, while driving at a moderate speed there should be enough cool air getting in to lower intake temps close to outside temps wouldn't you say?

This is with and unshielded KKM.

I have hooked up my OND II scanner and actually monitored intake air temp here in Florida.

At highway speed, the intake temp is about 4-5 F above ambient, In traffic and stopped at lights, the intake air temp is only about 10-15 F above ambient.

Ah, that's good to hear. I have the KKM right now and was worried about the hot air issue.

Based on the data I have tested with mine, I see NO reason to be concerned with cold air intake issue.

Well OK. Thanks Aldive! I guess I was worrying a lot about hot air for nothing.

Anyone have any experience with passing emissions tests with the KKM installed on a SOHC? I don't have to be tested until March '03, but as mentioned above, I am a bit of a worrier!

Same here, I am currently running around with no inspection here in NY. But when I go back home I will have to stop at the first service station when I cross the state line to get an inspection. Has anyone gotten an inspection on an OHV with a KKM in Texas, and did you pass with no problems?

My Ex has the 4.0 SOHC with the KKM intake. I had my truck inspected in November and it passed emmisons without any problems.

I live in Massachusetts which has the same emmission standards as California.
