I've got question. First of all, my air intake consists of a k&n drop in that is strip-tied to the air intake thingy, and the airbox is removed, thus giving open element. then i have a dryer pipe that runs from the factory fog opening up and shoots directly into the filter. its not sealed around there, so it still has the open air element but still gets cold air which helps in upper RPMs. how different is this from the KKM tru-rev? as far as i can determine, it's pretty much the same thing, if not a little better. it's open air, but it also gets that blast of cold air. any ideas?

I didnt' feel like spending money on the KKM or the K&N FIPK either. didn't exactly leave mine as an open air element like you. I basically replaced my air silencer with a 4" dryer hose and left it at that. I'm getting cold air channeled in this way, although it isn't as close to ram air as yours is.

The problem with your setup is that you still get a some warm engine air mixed with your cold air. Also, you probably don't have a heat shield blocking the warm engine & radiator air from the filter. Also, if you cross into any water, you might force some air into the hose and into the air intake, although this isn't likely with the design of the dryer hose & the fact that you aren't creating a vacuum on the hose.

I went the route that I went just because I still take the vehicle off the highway, and since it is two wheel drive, I have to take some things a little faster if I don't want to get stuck.

Hey guys,
Does any one have any pictures of this setup? I'm attempting to do the same thing (heat shield and cold air induction) with approximately the same materials. Can you offer an tips?

here's how to do cold air induction

i cant post any pictures now because i'm at the beach for this week, but i can give you detailed instructions on how to achieve the setup i have now. its very inexpensive for such a big power gain, about 45-50 bucks for the k&n filtercharger drop in and about 5 bucks for 8 feet of 3" aluminum dryer pipe. i have the 98 XLT model with the rectangle foglights. I DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ANY OTHER MODELS, so if you have a different model, i'm sorry but i wont be of any help to you. anyway, here you go:

-first, remove the airbox completely.
-strip tie the k&n filtercharger to the rectangular air intake.
-remove the factory foglights. i only did this because i have hella 500's in front of them, rendering the factory fogs useless.
-run the dryer hose from where the airbox used to be down to the foglight opening. be very careful because it gets very tight, and the dryer hose is very fragile.
-the top end of the dryer needs to point straght up into where the air induction usually is, but so there's enough room that oyu can strip tie the air induction back in place without having it rest on the dryer pipe, becaues this WILL screw up your filter.
-strip tie the air induction right above the dryer hose
-disconnect your battery for about an hour or so. this will reset your computer when you start driving again, because you'll be getting a hell of a lot more air than before

after this, do whatever you'd like at the induction end of the pipe. i reccomend screwing it into the plastic with a washer, possibly puting a screen on the end, and in the winter, it'd be best to cover it completely. hope this helps! if you have any questions, just reply.

Could you post some more detailed pic of your custom Safari Bar. I have one as well and am interested what you actually did.
Thanks,
Rob

like i said, i'm at the beach, so i dont have my digital camera uploader with me. i will take a picture or 2 when i get home though. what i did was take a 5 or so foot long "L" piece of aluminum, L shaped for better stability. then i took 2 brackets and put them on the 2 factory holes on the safari bar, and extended them outward. to these i attached the piece of aluminum. i then mounted the hella 1000's in those same 2 holes on the new piece of aluminum, and drilled another hole on either side of the 2 hellas. in these, i put the hella 500's. my dad then helped me rig up the wiring so that all 4 lights plug into a hitch type plug. now, to remove the whole bar with 4 lights on it, i simply remove the 2 bolts holding the bar on, and unplug the wirings in one simple plug. then i can easily install our beach box, which has foglights on it. its a cinch. i'll post some pics when i get home.

intake

Can this dryer hose method be done on ealier models? I have a 91' Navajo. I am contemplating turning the box into swiss cheese, but I am not real sure about it now. Any help?

this can be done on any model im sure, just no exactly the same way. the cold air in MLB2Nights ride was my plan (in fact, we share the explorer, so its mine as well) its actually very simple and does give some crazy gains, although we havent had it dyno'd. he will get some pics when we get back from the beach and you guys can drool in awe of our genius. be careful with that pipe though, i cut my hand about 6 times trying to run that hose down there

lol

hey fool, das mine sploro

i did everything to it, you just sat there and said, "no, thats stupid, dont do that to the explorer"

well now who's stupid!?!?!?

mu hu ha ha ha ha

(its you)

i am the master of the cold air.

and i dont wanna hear anything from you, Paul. We need to hang out soon, so i can show you some cold air tricks

its late, and im tired, so, looking back at this post, i wont even know what im talking about
