It seems I am going to buy the air intake first and then get the computer upgrade. I was wondering if the volant was really that much superior to the K&N or the Mac. I just can't see spending that kind of dough when the others do the same thing for less. Looks are not that important to me.

Current prices for V6 '98 Sohc

K&N $225
Volant $277
MAc $149

Don't know but horsepower gains seem relative. Bryan for Bamachips says any one will work fine.

I am aware of the dirt issue and it does seem that dirt does get under my hood to some degree but I do not four wheel on a frequent basis.

I am not a cheapo I just am struggling with cash at the present time. I really want to put this mod on my X.

I use the Mac and could have purchaced any of them. I am very happy with it.

I was about to buy a Mac but others here seemed controversial with it- mainly because they like the seeled volant. I also saw the KKM and a kit on ebay for $30 that just junks the stock airbox and provides a free flowing filter. I wonder if that is as beneficial as installing the full kit with new larger tube???

Thanks for the feedback AL, BTW how is the new 4.6 Throttle body?

The concept of a CAI is just a myth. Hook up an OBD scanner and monitor IAT and compare it to ambient; it is only a degree or two different at any speed over 40 MPH,

The new TB seems great; going to dyno next week.

Sorry bro but that is all greek to me?? what does that mean? Does the larger intake tube matter?

It seems as it will come down to Mac or K&N then....

With the aid of an OBD scanner ( on board diagnostics ) you can very accurately measure in real time the IAT ( intake air temperature ). This data can then be compared to ambient outside temperature,

Or a scanguage will also tell you this information
( see scanguage in the group buy section )

I have Volant on my Ex. I used to have MAC (Brian B bought it, FYI, there is no "Bryan" at Bamachips, that's Doug). I can assure you that performance is similar between the two. I do like the box concept of the Volant. I can say with certainty if keeps a bit more of the crap off the filter. I like the looks of the Volant setup better than MAC too, but that's all personal preference. I paid $200/shipped for my Volant so price wasn't as bad. The MAC is probably the best value "name" intake out there. You won't go wrong with either Volant, K&N or MAC. Let your budget and tastes guide you.

K&N

I just bolted on my K&N FIPK Gen. II this week and I must say I am very pleased with the looks, performance, and sound. :D I can't help but hit the pedal down every now and then just to listen to its very throaty sound. The fact that it has a 1,000,000 mile warranty was also a plus. K&N has a very good reputation and is vey reliable, just something to think about when you make your next filter buy.

Hey Lazz, Well I currently have the KKM intake on my Ex, and it is great I like the "throaty sound" also. But I have a MAC on the way... I guess you can say that the chrome talked me into it.. :D :D Like someone said... let your budget do the talking, you won't really notice difference in preformace between them all. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all the great responses. I used to have a Toyota Turbo that I upgraded like crazy. One of my first mods was the air intake and I chose an Apexi unit with an open filter, I never noticed much dirt or debris on it but the engine was in the rear of the car. My Explorers engine gets a bit dusty here and again, I washed the engine bay about four weeks ago and recently saw a layer of dust on the airbox and fluid covers- then again I do love to clean my truck and filters on a regular basis.

Celly where did you get a volant #19640 for $200 ????

Through this site. There was a guy selling two of them, brand new in the box and had them listed in the classifieds (and on the classifieds on two other sites). He had them listed for eons and no one bit at them for some reason. I finally took one off his hands, and he sold another on eBay a little while later for about the same when you factored in shipping.

I'm always a day late and a few dollars short...

You seemed to imply that you'd like to save money. Go with MAC. I've seen several threads on several sites that say there's a place that does MAC for $139 shipped. You won't go wrong.

Thanks Celly..... I guess for the bucks you just cant go wrong.
