Almost complete restoration 2001 xls

I do things just like that, maybe every now and then semi synthetic oil, but I don't run it for more than 3k km. I push it a bit some times, but mostly with one or two passengers, I never tow, never push it to much, never real hardcore off roading. This time I'm gonna go with shorter intervals with the oil and use only Mobil 1 synthetic since most of the moving parts of the engine will be new or rehauled.
oh i meant 3k mi. oh wow thats a really ahort interval!!! is that maybe... 1800mi? for the break in what oil did you use? syn? dino?

maybe snake oil but personally i use motorkote, seems to work well feels like theres a film on the stuff.

yeah, theres something to be said about them old ones! sinple point and shoot, ya get the idea! but these new ones are nicer than ever 😂 and plus dont need to worry about issues (usually) when theyre newer, in the case of the 2g were past the point where theyre still newer and issue free!
I'd say quite past that point ha ha, but when even the car wash guys ask if I'm willing to sell it, and everyone in the family compliments my truck and it's looks and function, it's nice. I had hoped to be able to get a new limited explorer in white, and keep the old one and have both in my garage, but since the explorer has increased its price quite a bit, maybe I'll get the Toyota duo (my old rav4 limited 2005 and a new rav4).

yeah! have had a few ask about it! always a good feeling that youre doing the right thing and caring for it. some think its newer than it is, some thought 2010s 😂 wayyy off!

i myself wouldnt mind the new X's, wish it was still like the 4G but imo 6g is better than 5g. pricing too high though.wouldnt mind another 2g or 1g though... :D

If I'm using full synthetic I go about 3000 miles. If I use semi or other because of a hurry, that's when I go about 1800 miles, but right now with the new components I'm thinking about always going full synthetic regardless of the hurry I'm in, and maybe shortening the mileage to like 2,500 or so.

The car is stil in the shop, so I haven't done the brake in period, but my mechanic said we should use semi synth for about 500 miles and then switch to mobil 1,since the first oil is pretty much going to be wasted.

Yeah, I feel that this 2001 is gonna be with me until it pretty much desintegrates or get hit by a meteor or something. Here in Mexico it's not that expensive to fix a car as it is in the states, but in contrast, buying used cars is quite more expensive

So far the expenses are adding up, but it hasn't been too bad. Wheels and shocks I feel like are out of the budget of the rehauling, cause even if I didn't need the engine fixed, I would've need to install them.

I'm gonna try and list the expenses in dollars.

About a year ago trans rebuilding $750
Shocks KYB, one ball joint, air filter, a couple of rubber parts, hood struts and labor about $280
New michelin ltx force 235/75/15 with hot sale 25% off about $550 with labor, balancing, nitrogen, valves, etc in costco
Few nuts and bolts, light bulbs, glass hatch struts, led fog lights like $90
Timing components front and back, both heads rebuilt, bent valves, motor mount, new pistons, block details, head rust fix, metals in pistons arms, seals, few little parts here and there with parts and labor about $1480

Stil missing new clockspring if I can find one in my country (I've been searching for quite a while)
Rear wiper motor
Glass hatch hinges

Found new reinforced hinges with all the hardware in Amazon Mexico for about 50 and a new generic wiper motor for 60,i might order them next year. I know back wiper design shucks in these, but for 60 bucks I might give it a go.

The real problem has been the clockspring.

I might get the truck back on Monday, and then I'll post several pics.

Yeah, the trans shop really took responsability and did a good job. For the mileage and age the truck looks pretty good, and I really enjoy driving it.

You can run 5000mi between changes on a quality synthetic. Best way to determine is to do oil analysis. At 3000mi on a synthetic, I guarantee it comes back virtually new.

Not looking to start an oil war, just looking to save you some cash. 3000mi is still a general guideline for dino oil.

Thanks to you both, I've never had oil tested, I might have to do some research and look up an oil lab in my city, I've never heard of one around here.

i used blackstone but theyre here in the states

Bummer, so the custom pistons didn´t arrived on time, and it might be a few more days to get the truck back. Mechanic told me to give him a call on monday, as they are supposed to arrive early that same day and he might finish getting averything together tuesday morning. With pandemic, war and so much going on some pieces are scarce around here.
