it's amazing how high amperage will fry stuff. I was once working on a motorcycle with the shop's owner, trying to figure out why the battery wasn't charging (turned out to be a corroded "B" terminal) but he accidently dropped the "B" terminal wire and the large lug grounded on the engine block - poof and a puff of smoke and it was completely gone in a fraction of a second.
