Is there any physical ( I mean mounting ) difference in the 95 amp alternator and the 130 amp one?

Mine is dying as I type.

Thanks in advance .....

Nope they are the same mounting wise. I have a 130 here new in the box just waiting for a install but that'll occur once I get a winch.

Thanks, Ben.

The SOHC and V8 Explorers take the same alternator, and the OHV V6 is different. The lower two bolts are farther apart on the OHV's.

My 99 donor vehicle had no alternator, and they gave me a 2000 model. It turned out to be the OHV version. I just recently stuck it on my 91 Explorer, which was pushing 15.4 volts at idle, bubbling the battery.

Al, do you need more power, the factory 130's should feed most basic stuff. If you need more, there is a 170 amp alternator available for about $135. That's what I chose for my 93/99 mail vehicle. Good luck,

Don, who makes the 170? Where do I find one?

Run a search on Ebay, for "new alternator 170." The name DB Electronics rings a bell. They are near me in TN, my cost with taxes was about $155.

I called them directly at the time, because I hadn't yet figured out the difference in alternators. If you find the auction, and match the power post location to yours, you will have a match. Good luck,

How about a 200 amp model at Mr Alternator? You can even pay an extra $25 to get it powdercoated to match the rest of the bling under your hood.

BBQ Hotdogs used to have one. It made it north of the border to Dirty Dog who just offered it to me. I want it (hence why I knew the Mr Alternator link).

Don't need that power, thanks anyway.

I didn't either. Wasn't even in the market for a new alternator although I did catch my headlights flickering a bit the other day while I was pounding my stereo. Planned on getting one some day, but DD approached me. I could have done without the red powdercoat, but it'll do.

Good luck lining one up fast. I saw a discussion on another board and most people suggest contacting a local alternator supplier and getting yours "re-wound" (whatever that means) and re-built in the process. Not sure if that applies to you.

Al, you can't borrow one or make do for a couple of days? As mentioned, the V8 alternator is the same as yours.

If this is just a replacement, not for high powered big accessories, you can find a local generator shop to rebuild yours quickly. It's usually less than half the cost of a rebuilt alternator. Here they can usually match or exceed the best factory available specs. Good luck,

I really have no need for the power and I do not want to do any rewiring.

I have located several 130 amo units and will probably pick up one tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Al, those rewiring suggestions are based on a lot of instances where people(kids) threw high draw loads(amplifiers) into their vehicles. There are common applications which require a new alternator wire with a rebuilt unit. Some Mustangs come with new alternator wires, with the alternator.

Basically the Explorers do not have any known wiring problems. If you aren't adding something that will radically tax the charging system, any alternator will do fine.

My mail vehicle is going to receive a few new loads, totalling a max of about 40 amps. I will add a power wire from the alternator to a specific relay terminal, and all of the extra circuits will get power from that one wire. I will have a better ground wire made, as the factory battery terminal was cut off(roll over). My factory system will be untaxed, given my additions, and isolation of extra circuits. Regards,
