I have a 05 Explorer 4.6. I read and reread just about everything on here on putting a alternator in. I bought my alternator and my breaker bar, but I've ran into a issue. I cant seem to release the belt. I somehow was able to get the alternator off (it was the original) but i still can't get the belt released off the tensioner. What am I doing wrong? Is there any other way to get the belt on?

You need to get a 3/8 ratchet in the square hole on the part the pulley attaches to. Then pull the ratchet so the pulley portion swings away from the belt that goes around it.

You can rent a special tool for this, as there’s not a lot of finger room.

Once you’ve removed enough tension, remove the belt from the alternator pulley, just keep fingers out of any pinch zones.

Ratchet will come back a greater distance without the belt on the pulley, so again, don’t pinch a finger.
