1996 Explorer 4x4
I just got hold of a 1996 Explorer XLT 4x4 V6. I am not sure which V6 it is but I think there was only one in the 96 models. Dont know for sure.

Anyway, the truck sit for like 2 years. We put a battery on it and started it and there's a bad knock. It sounds just like someone's living right inside the engine and tapping on the block with a hammer. It stays constant. I actually had to drive it 1/2 mile like that to get it home. I was terrified I would kill the thing but had no choice. Anyway, it fires right up and drives except for the loud knock. I noticed on other posts where knocks seemed to be caused by a number of things on this vehicle. The truck was pretty dirty underneath bhut no signs of leakage. I do know that the transmission was replaced at one time. I dont know if the knock was there before it set for 2 years. I am very familiar with earlier model cars and my ears say rod knock...but would like to avoid lifting the engine if it's only a typical Ford blunder.

Thanks.

Its probably rod knock, the typical ford pushrod tick sounds nothing like a knock.

Welcome to this forum! Some models have a knock sensor. Maybe it is no good, or moisture might have gotten into the gas tank (condensation) from sitting around so long. Try to add some new gasoline, or a water remover to the tank.

If its a 96, then it is the 4.0 OHV (pushrod) engine, because they didn't offer the SOHC engine until 97.

Thanks for those replies. I am more than willing to try all those things before pulling the engine. I haven't been able to find out if there was a recall on a rod pin or something considering that knock came out of nowhere. Thanks again for the replies and I will post what happens.
