I am sure this has been discussed before, but I found no answers using the search feature. My quesstion is, can to many bends in an exhaust make the Explorer have less power then a stock exhaust. Mine runs fine on cool days, but when it gets hot, it completely falls on it's face. The exhaust pipe has a 90 degree bend as it comes out of the muffler, and wonder if this could cause a decrease in exhaust scavaging.

Post a picture of the exit ( from muffler ) piping.

If it isn't less than a 2.5" pipe, or crushed at the bend, it should be fine. Mandrel bends take some power away, but exhaust shop crushing benders hurt performance a bunch more. Good luck,

Dude, I doubt it is your exhaust that is causing your X to fall on its face when hot. On one of your posts you said that your IAT sensors temp was at 150 at idle. That is way to high even on a warm day here in Cali. Mine runs a few degrees above ambient at idle. Your IAT could be on its way out the door, but try to clean it first, if that doesn't help then it may be time to replace it. Also, cleaned your MAF lately.

I completely agree that the IAT is within a few degrees of ambient at speeds over 40.

However, in traffic here in Florida, I have observed IAT up to 150 F.

Unfortunately Aldive I have no way of taking pics of the exhaust. The bend from the muffler to the tail pipe is a 90 degree bend up to the heatshield (about 8 inches) which I still think is way to much. I talked to several shops today who said that the bend is not unreasonable, but I am not satisfied with that answer. However, I did clean the IAT and MAF which did make a big difference, in take off power, but the HP is still down when the weather is hot.

Nope, I mean IAT (intake air temperature sensor). It had some kind of oil on it which could have been from me cleaning the k&n filter. It does run better though. Also one of the wires on the MAF was dirty so I cleaned it as well. Who knows maybe that is whats causing my problems. I disconnected the battery and will start it up tomorrow to reset the computer. Will let you know if this fixed my problem. Thanks guys for your help.

I doubt an exhaust would cause the vehicle to run bad only when hot. That sounds like other issues, and NOT an exhaust issue. If it was an exhaust issue, it would happen at all times and NOT only when hot.

Not to be rude... but he sounds like he isn't going to be happy till someone tells him something he wants to hear... multiple exhaust pros say bend is OK but he won't believe them because they won't agree with his accessment... Why even bother driving to their shops and asking them...

This sounds like a no win thread... IMHO

I agree.. only to the fact that he "states" HP "falls on it's face" (ie, have proof, other than "seat of your pants"?) only when it's hot out.
Outside temperature (ie, air temp) can affect HP, due to factors OTHER THAN the exhaust. Just because the exhaust tubing has a 90* bend, it WILL NOT affect HP on ONLY hot days. If it were to affect HP, it would affect it AT ALL TIMES.
If it only depends on ambient air temperature, then it has to do with other sensors on the engine.

How is the IAT similar/different to the older versions inside of the intake manifolds? If they similarly don't function properly when too dirty, they can be permanently damaged. If nothing else comes to mind quickly, replacing a dirty IAT sensor is a good idea. Regards,

Its fixed, Its fixed...Dead Link Removed

Ok, there were two things wrong with my X.
1) Tail pipe had too many bends in it. I talked to a Dynomax rep this morning and after explaining how the system was set up, he said, that ain't going to work. He gave me the phone number of a shop that deals mainly with dynomax exhaust. So after talking to the shop, I went over there and he took off the 2.25 POS tail pipe and installed a 2.5 tail pipe that should have came with the super turbo kit I ordered. Much inprovement in power:)
2) He also monitored the computer and said there was to much of a difference in parimeters between the MAF, IAT, and Coolant sensor. He saw that I had a Pro-M racing MAF and asked if I had ordered it with or without cold air induction. I told him that I wasn't aware there was a difference. So he called the EE service rep and asked what the MAF was set up for. She told him cold air. **** I have been running stock air cleaner all along, so I just ordered the MAC intake from Downs Ford racing for $115.00. Should be here by Friday, and hope this fixes everything.
