Getting ready to replace the Crap-Years that came stock on the 07 Sport Trac.

Stock Tire Size... I believe it is 245/65R17

How big can I go without needing any modification?

I am assuming 255's will fit, but what about 265?

Appreciate any help... I will check back in the morning.

Don't know if there is a difference in the Sport Trac to Ex on the wheel well clearance, but maybe a mod can move this to the 2007+ Sport Trac area for me.

Thanks for the move.... now only if I could get an answer...

Here's a bump.

Sorry I can't help you... I ditched the factory Forteras immediately after doing a 2.5" lift, so I can't comment on clearance without mods.

Thanks for the Bump. I am going to do the coil spring spacers on the 08 Exp. That ones Mine. I will go bigger on those tires with the Forteras wear out on it. Should only be another 10K miles... Damn piece of crap tires.

As for the Sport Trac. That one is a lease. Lease is up in Feb and we are going to buy it. I was gonna wait for the lease to be up to replace the tires, but the crap-years didn't make it that long.

On all the Fords I have owned, which isn't that many only 6, I am still young, all came with stock good years, and never had a single set of them last more than 25K with proper rotation and maintainance.

The wife doesn't want her Trac lifted. I told her I was gonna put biggerones on and she kind of just gave me a blank stare and asked why....

Alright... I did some searching since I had some time. I was hoping I wouldn't have to as I do not get much comp. time at home or work.

From what I can tell... If I take it to a 265 it will Rub.

So... Let's see if I can get an answer to these:

If I go 255/70R17... Will the wider tire rub?

Or should I just go 255/65R17?

Don't want the tires to rub, as the wife and I both frequently have to make full **** turns, or at least she does, you would have to see our driveway to understand.

I don't think I have ever seen a thread go this long without a helpful response.:(

Not sure if this is going to help, but on my 2008 st I have 265/65/18 on the stock rims. If your offset is similar then just match up this size in a wheel size calculator and you should get your answer. I can tell you that with my offset there is only room for 1 finger between the front tire and the upper mount. But again no rubbing issues.

255/70/17 (31') will fit no problem. Had that size on mine before installing the 20's, now I run 275/55/20.

Sorry, I was out of town at the NASCAR race in Bristol.
My neighbor has 265/70-17's on his regular Explorer with no issues.
I just kept the stock size on my Trac when I got new tires for gas mileage reasons.
I have a jetski, 2000 Polaris Virage that I got new.

Does your neighbor have any rubbing issues?

Polaris's are nice skis, to bad they stopped making them.

Oh... and GO BURGH!... Gotta love them Stillers!!! Born and raised steelers fan from South Jersey!

No, he said they're fine.

The letter I got from Polaris a few years ago said that they simply didn't make money on the jetskis and never did. Mine handles like a dream, better than any other one I've ever ridden. Pretty fast for a 700 cc too. It'll hit an honest 50 mph. I do have a Skat Trak impeller on it (after I chunked the OE), which didn't help the top end but the acceleration and hookup is much improved.

I have had the same problem with my stock Michelin's on two different vehicles. It seems that many new tire designs are going to a softer and sticky tread compound. If you think about it, they don't squeel as much as they did in the past, like when going around a corner too fast. My Michelins grip well, but I will be lucky to get 25K miles out of them, and thats mostly highway driving too! I am also looking at a bigger size, in a truck tire this time!

I just put LT245/70/17 Firestone Tranforce AT's on mine. no rub and they look great!! hope the gas miliage doesnt drop.

I just put 285X50X20 on mine and no rubbing etc

I want to replace my stock 235/65/18 tires (worn out) with 265/65/18s. They have many more All Terrain options. Is this possible without modifications?

I understand that Paul had success without rubbing.

Thank you for your feedback.

265/65R18 with AT's would be a bit big for my liking, assuming no mods (not even spacers), like you said.
I'd recommend sticking closer to 30-31" tires (yes, 0.5" makes the difference to me) just to be on the safe side of things. I have 255/60R18 Grabber AT2s - I'm quite fond of them. I've driven them through mud, sand, a creek, gravel and clay. Only time I've been stuck so far was when I drove on a clay floodplain area of a vacant lot and I sunk 5" as soon as I slowed to turn (curse you loss of momentum!). And I'm even just a lowly 2wd.

Do you have any brand or specific tire design that you'd like?

hello floffroad

I did not have a specific brand in mind. I did look up the tires you mentioned on tirerack.com and they look just right for what i'm trying to accomplish.

I occasionally travel in semi-deep soft sand with ruts and I'm barely getting by with the 235/65/18s. I'll take .5" increase in radius if i can.

Thanks for your response

I am a fan of the Michelin Cross Terrains. Got 80000 miles on a set of these on our Envoy. My'07 ST had these on when I bought it and they are quiet and do great on snow. We'll see what kind of mileage I get on the ST with these.
