I have a 98 mountaineer with a 5.0 V8 and just as I am coming to a stop the anti-lock brakes release and I slide forward. The ABS light never comes on. For right now I just pulled the ABS fuse under the hood so my ABS light is now on but my brakes work fine.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Mike

Thanks BrooklynBay I appreciate the help :dpchug:

If that doesn't work then you probably have a sensor that's gone bad. I must have damaged my left front one (thats where I feel the ABS messing up when I brake) when I was mistakenly banging on my rotor to remove the rotor...I cleaned the sensor to no avail, so a new sensor will be in my future. I too pulled the fuse, have light, but brakes work fine.

Anyone have pics of the sensor and how to get to it? Did some searching and sounds like if it is bad, it is cheaper to buy a new hub which has a new sensor already attatched. Dealer wanted over $200 just for the sensor.... I have the same prob as posted above. No ABS light either.

Well new hubs are not in the cards at the moment. I will go without the ABS for now and have good breaks. Thanks for the information, I will know right where to go when I am able to replace the hubs.

I just came searching for the exact same problem on my mom's 2000 4.0L. I heard that the ABS wheel sensor may need cleaning, but I thought it was permanently integrated into the hub assy.

Anyone have instructions (w/photos!!!) that show how to remove and replace a front wheel speed sensor??

If you have a 4x4, the tone ring and sensor are sealed inside the hub. If you have metal shavings on the sensor, you've got bigger issues.

On a 2wd, the sensor is exposed. It can be cleaned.

The bottom line is that one of the sensors is likely dropping the signal prematurely. That could be either of the two fronts or the rear axle speed sensor. Without running a diagnostic on the ABS system, there's no way to know for sure which of the three possiblities it is. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of throwing parts at a problem without a confirmed diagnosis.

abs problem on my '99 ranger was cured by replacing the sensor in the top of the rear differential. I'm guessing from what was mentioned above, I could've just cleaned off the iron filings and reused my sensor.

do I possibly need to drain and refill my differential. those iron filings worry me.

J...thanks again for an informative forum

gijoe, I never thought about the possibility of the right or rear sensor causing the prob I experience. Assumed it was the drivers front sensor since it pulls to the left when doing a slow stop. It doesnt occur at fast speeds when stopping. And I couldnt agree more, I dont like throwing parts at a problem (time to replace but especially the money) without knowing what is bad. Appreciate the info. Will be cleaning the rear sensor this morning.

Jumpin J--I will have to see what you are talking about with the rust falling in the diff. Yesterday I put on a new diff cover, good part is it has a drain plug! So if I need to replace the fluid it will be a much easier job.

:exp:Hi all, my troubles...my 98 x abs was going off at a stop...put a computer on it and when I stepped on the brake the info disappeared...replaced the ABS computer and now I get a code for the right sensor...just a note the ABS light does not come on when the ABS has been activated. The light comes on when I 1st start the veh then goes off. I replaced the hub and I still have the problem...check relays fuses, and wiring. Also when I come to the stop and the ABS goes of the vehicle will pull to the right....What do I do next...HLEP PLEASE!

siu, I cant say for sure, the ABS problems were new to me, had no experience beforehand. I ended up finding an actual Brand New Ford Hub (made by Timken) on ebay for like $75 and replaced the passenger side. Problem fixed so far. Like noting previously, throwing parts at a problem isnt time or cost effective. I would think if the code says it is bad it would be, but there are alot of really talented and sharp people here that will probably give you a very real answer.

Thanks...I just tested the ABS that I replaced and the reading was 450ohms...then I checked the LF and I got 000...might be the problem side. Still baffled on the Computer test that indicated the right sensor was bad....thanks for responding to me....I hate to replace the left one if it's just a glitch....FYI this is a 98 with only 38k on it. It was my father's and it was garaged all of the time...

The local ford dealership want to replace the rear differential parts for NZ$7000 because of metal filings? What's with that???

Well, that's not on.

More information, what have you got? Why were you at the dealer?
