Im just curious what people have done with a custom rear bumper if they've got a 3" body lift.. I made my front based on a 3" body lift and it turned out great, just the rear is posing to be an issue. The rear crossmember is in my way (well, not in the way, but its just fugly, and I cant hide it like I want too). I guess Im being picky and that I want a wicked departure angle like I have approach...

This is what Im dealing with if people arent quite sure what it looks like.

And this is how it stands today, I have room for play on the side of the truck where those chrome covers used to be at the back. Cut them off as well.

Ive got one, ill look around when I have time to find pics, in the mean time try looking in my photo album or in the threads listed blow.

That second gen is sort of what I had in mind, except originally in my design I wanted to tuck the bumper up as high as possible. My front bumper sits on top of my frame, so I thought I could do the same with the rear, but that crossmember just sticks out like its nobodies buisness.

When I have more time after work I'll play with some more ideas, but until then I get to read, yay for research! lol

That bumper is as high as it will get. The back looks just like yours with the rear quarters cut.

I bought that bumper from him and put it on mine. We had to have the mounts remade, but it's as high as it will go.

The pictures in your original post dont work. I would like to see them, as I also need to build some bumpers and have a 3" body lift. I know what cross member you are talking about, and I would have to go look at it, but would it be possible to move it forward to allow you to cut a better departure angle on the frame?

i see pics fine

I dont have a 3" body lift, I only have a 1" BL but this might help. Here is a pic of my bracket with holes drilled for stock and 1" body lift. You could make it similar with holes for a 2", 3" or more positions if you wanted and more "ramp" angle on the bracket. The bottom of the pic is the top of the bumper.

I am at work and we have an overprotective firewall that sometimes cuts out pictures. I'll have to look at this at home later.

In the mean time, check out the "Great Pumpkin". Rick's is a first generation that had a 3" body lift and a nice bumper. I think he may have removed all or part of the body lift, but at least in the older pics you might see something you like.

You wouldnt have any pictures of the mounting, would you Froader? Creating an overall design isnt that difficult for me, it was more of a "Crap... I forgot about that x member.. Can I still pull it off nicely?". IMO Im overly picky about things I design and such. I want them to look good, and have the best of everything, with no cons.. Not saying the one you bought sucks, but I havent seen your truck from the side to see its departure angle.

Im probably going to have to face reality and realize that what I want isnt all that possible, and if it is, it wont be worth the effort to get there. I mean really.. I'll put some stuff on paper and then ask around before I start welding things up. Its weird how the back will actually take more thinking than the front did lol, and the front is awesome imo.

I might still have the pics of the mounts when it was on his truck. You'll have to wait until I get home in 2.5 hours though .:)
It mounts to the stock bumper location, just had the 3" added to it. I'll find them when I get home.

Ok, now I'm home and the pictures work fine. Just the darn firewall at work. So after looking at the pictures, I definatley see what you mean. (I'm surprised you haven't gotten a ticket. I had my bumper off like that for one day and got a ticket!)

Anyway, I think I would would go just in front of the cross member and box in the frame, then put in a better looking cross brace and/or cover it with sheet metal on an angle. Then you can then cut along that angle for your departure angle and put your bumper on top of the frame like you did on the front. Use a thick piece of sheet metal/ reinforce it and you can slide of rocks.

I hope that makes sense. It looks good in my head, but I'm not sure I did a good job explaining myself.

Well, I've got an idea down in steel so far.. And I like it. I should get most of it done tomorrow (got the basics done today) after work. I'll take some pics of it if I remember my camera in the morning. This whole fabrication thing is fun.. hehe, next on the list is a set of sliders so I can make my tube fender flares :D which will be the basis for my exo-cage.. If I can support it well enuff. I'll get a 'professional' to assess my situation once the fenders are tubed and what not.

Not sure what else I should make after this is all done... Aside from brackets and stuff for my SAS when that happens, but that keeps getting pushed back... I need a second vehicle that works :(

Anywho, again I should have some pics to show tomorrow :D

Thanks for the pics guys.

One last question before I pack'er in for the night. I remember seeing a few posts awhile ago (like last year.. if not 2 years ago) about some hinges people used for their tire carriers on the rear bumpers... Have any idea where I could find some of those Froader? Your name rings a bell about the threads, unless that was 410Fortune.. Sometimes I get you two mixed up lol

Once I have the overall design done for the rear Im gonna beef the crap out of one side so its good to go for a tire carrier, and I'll probably do what everyone else does and mount a gas can on the otherside, just because Im a poser and the metal jerry cans are fricken awesome looking :D

That would be it :) Thanks a ton man!

-Edit-

Ugh, but I think its gonna cost me $100cnd to get it here.. $45 US for the hinge, $25 US shipping.. And then whatever they want to rape me with for customs... I guess I'll go take a look at some trailer shops around town tomorrow after work while Im grabbing more parts and see if I can get anything locally. Now I at least remember what the hinge looked like!

lots of people make them using wheel spindles and hubs.

that would be me who used that hinge in my bumper which i finally got aroudn to making. Its not done yet but here is the thread and i can stand on the spare tire holder with a 33" and it doesn tmove when i bounce on it.. i weight 230.

oh and i have a 3" bl
