Any recommendations on replacement tires?

I have a '99 Explorer Sport 4WD with about 60K. It has the Goodyear OEMs that replaced the original Firestones due to the recall. It will be driven mainly on the road with the a few desert trips per year and the occassional winter mountain adventure.

Also, can the stock rims take a larger tire than the 255/70 16 that it came with?

most of the people in here they use bfg a/t and they love them. i have michelin ltx and i'm swiching pretty soon to Kumho Venture M/T desent in the road and excellent performance offroad.

you can fit 31 on your stock wheels.

Thank you very much for your advice. Yes, I ran bdg a/t on my old fj40 and liked them a lot. It seems like there are a lot more choices today than when I drove the landcruiser a long time ago. Are the bridgestone desert duelers not very popular with explorer owners?

some people in here they run bridgestone a/t revos and they are excellent in all conditions.

my personal opinion due to your needs look first into bridgestone revos and then for the bfg a/t

I've got Dunlop Radial Rovers on 2 different vehicles, my dads f150 and my explorer. They are really good in snow and wet, but also very good on dry pavement. They have very little noise for the tread that they have. But I looked at a new set of these recently and the tread pattern has changed so they may be crap now.

tirerack.com is one of the best websides to get tires.if you want to go with larger tires than the stock ones (235/75/15) make sure that you put another vehicle because they will not let you get them.

before you take your final decition make sure that bigger tire maybe look cool, but is going to kill your mileage.

Tires are a great topic of conversation on the forum. I feel that there is no reason to go cheap on tires because they are the only thing(s) that make contact between your X and the road. With that said i would suggest either a set of Goodyear Silent Armors' or a set of BFG AT's. The goodyears I feel grip the road better in all driving conditions because of the design of the tire and all of the sipeing, i thnk that is how you spell it. But on the other hand the Goodyears do cost a preaty penny. If you are going to spend a little bit of time off road and a good portion of your time on road then I would suggest the Michlen LTX's because they were very good tires in all conditions and they last for about 132,x.. miles.

Both of my sons work in off-road shops, and they've had great success with the Pro-Comp AT's. They run quiet, wear like iron, balance great, and are priced better than the BFG's. They're running them on their own vehicles, which says something. I'll be switching to them in place of my Michelins next. Side-by-side, they outperform the tires I'm currently running (Duelers).

I got the dueler REVOS. Right after i got them one we had a huge rain storm, lasted a week, they ran very well through1-2 standing water on expressway. Then really warm weather and they ran great on dry. Now snow, we got slammed here in Cleveland (I see your from LA so snow does not help) but They clean out really well, never used 4wheel drive. The look is great, I think they kind of mix a street tread with an off road tread, large clean outs and tread. If you do go bigger though you will see a large mileage decrease, depending on how large you go
