I seriously considered selling mine this weekend.

Here's the story.

Last weekend I put it on jack stands in my warehouse and pulled the front drive shaft. I had a vibration and growl from the front.

Both ends of the DS were shot. So I ordered one from Detroit Axle. It came in Friday night.

I put it in Saturday. It was an all day ordeal which proved Murphy's Law many times.

Once it was in I started it and put it in drive while still on the stands.

It immediately started screaming like a Banshee.

The CV end was trash.

So after a horribly frustrating day I decided to put the 4406 in. I've had all of the parts for the swap for months.

So today the console absolutely refused to come out. 2 1/2 hours later the console finally came out.

After running and getting a new universal for the socket, all the bolts for the TC were out.

After letting the fluid drip into a bucket I started sliding the TC further back.

It caught me off guard and came free.

I thought I broke my left hand when it got caught between the TC and the bucket.

It's not broken, just sore as hell.

So after all weekend I'm left with my truck in pieces, but ready to start going back together.

Guess what I'll be doing in the evenings this week.

I just have to find a jack that will lift the 4406 high enough to get it in.

A lifted truck that is sitting 6" off the ground on stands makes it fun trying to get a jack that will raise it up that high.

Wish me luck.

I hope your hand gets better, I know the feeling.

I have a suggestion beyond "good luck"

If you cannot handle the transfer case by hand find someone who can and offer them some beer--money-food whatever it takes. The 4406 will need to be rotated and manipulated into place. It doesn't just go right up, and, once it is in place the fit is pretty tight. Bend the gas tank bracket while it is in place, then remove it for additional clearance. Double check the jack stands for safety, Things will be shaken and stirred a bit while you are under there.

Oh! trim the plastic shield on the gas tank now - it is a lot easier to trim now than when the drive shaft is in the way-

Ok, now
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.

I'm going to pick up a low profile transmission jack from Harbor Freight. With the 20% coupon it'll be about $80.

I've already taken a BFH to the trouble spots and moved the wiring bundle forward the one hole.

The tank bracket is off and pre-bent, I'm sure it'll take some more finessing to get it right.

The hand is swollen and sore, but usable.

Now just to see what this afternoon brings.

When I did the mountaineer I used two ratchet straps , one to pull the exhaust towards the pass side and one to hold the gas tank out of the way , this helps when trying to rotate the case into place, good luck don't give up cause it will amaze you how different it is when you are done

IMHO a jack of any kind will be a PITA, it's just under 100 pounds just press it up in there.

I say this because I'm more used to the cast iron 205 and 203 that are twice that heavy. My 4406 is a joy to remove and install.

Jacks are a pain since the TC needs to be ****ed and you can't jack them up like that. Then when it's as high as it will go you got a stupid jack in the way when you try to tilt the TC.

I agree with Turdle.

A little update.

I finally got the 4406 bolted in last night.

The transmission jack worked wonderfully. The platform that TC sat on had 2 screw adjusters to tilt it both directions.

What ended up causing me fits was that I hadn't used the BFH enough on the spot where the case goes up in front of the fuel tank.

After getting a 1/2" x 8" bolt, to use as a punch, and swinging a few more times I had the needed room.

The other issue that got me was that I was trying to force it up with it clocked wrong.

After taking another look and clocking it almost correctly, it slid right in.

But now Murphy has been working overtime.

The rear drive shaft I bought which was supposed to be out of a 2001 5.4 4wd Navigator is 2 1/4" too long.

I'll be dropping it off this afternoon to have it shortened.

Hopefully it will be finished, except for the rear d-shaft this weekend.

How about the front shaft? I had to trim mine when I did the mountaineer , now I'm in the process of putting an electric shift 4406 in my V8 sport

The front was tight but it went in.

I think they sent me a rear fro a 2wd by mistake.

I just don't have time to wait for another and in all fairness I've had the parts since last March.
