Hate to post here with this but the Explorer is out of commision and my wife is on me to have ti running by Friday for a 250 mile trip. The thermostat housing that has the 2 sensors and a heater hose going to it has a loose bushing on one of the sensors that is leaking. Dealer order a new one Saturday for $134 and today I went to pick it up and it was a steel upper housing. Blah, Blah from them, Ford parts catalog blows they say. Anyway, I need to fix the one I have with sealant and jb weld or something or find a place online to order one. Nobody online seems to list it, do they carry more if you call than what they show online? I am attaching a photo of it. I am leary to try to fix it but now the dealer says he can get the right one but it is $206.

Any ideas,
Rob

there is only so much teflon tape and jb weld can fix
i use them alot but $$$206 just might be worth it if ur goin on a long trip like that. thats just me, i like to fix things fully so they dont break again u know!!!

good luck with ur choice and keep us informed!

try autozone or some store like that they are normally much cheaper the dealer wanted 178 bucks for my egr sensor and autozone wanted 50 bucks both parts are probably made by the same company anyway lol.

I am leary of the JB Weld though tempted to try it. Had to pull the upper and lower manifold to get that thing off so I hate to do it again in the near future if the jb does not hold. I just hate to buy it from the dealer after this fiasco. Hoping to find it online somewhere. I have another car I can take on the trip, just would have been nice to have the room for presents in the Explorer. I will try to PM the guy Brooklynbay mentioned.

I will keep you all posted on what I do and how it works out.
Thanks,
Rob

there was a crack in the block of the motor on my friend boat he jb welded it and its been holding for the past 2 years lol

really??? how big of a crack?

I had a crack in my OHV 4.0L block, I was really really really stupid one day when I was replacing my power steering box (88 BII) I noticed my oil pressure sender for my gage was leaking a bit so I went to tighten it up, well the fitting into the Ford block is tappered, I tightened a bit to much and it cracked my block.

instead of pulling the engine in favor of a new one, Brett decided we would JB weld it.
He cleaned the surfaces ALOT, then threaded in the fitting and J B welded it in place, filling the crack, threads, and surrounding area, he used a toothpick to put the JB weld on. We let it dry for 24 hours, filled it with oil and it held.
In fact it held for 3+ years

I think we may be jumping the gun here.

The threaded sensor is leaking coolant where it threads into the manifold?
Or is the manifold itself cracked?

You said the bushing was bad, on these sensors they are pipe style fittings, there are no bushings, just silicoln from the factory on the threads.
I use teflon tape myself and if its leaking I usually remove the sensor, clean the threads, apply more teflon tape and thread it in. $209 for a coolant temp sensor is absurd, if thats what you are getting at with your post, its not 100% clear what is leaking

Also your dealer sucks :)

410explorer,
you are right about the dealer. Both dealers here want $200ish for the part. It was leaking around the sensor but it was where the copper threaded portion the sensor srews into meets the plastic. Like the threaded portion had dislodged from the bond with the plastic. I will likely end up buying a new one though the post above with the liquid steel looks interesting. I am tempted to try that. The sensor is stuck to the bushing and just turns with the bushing in the plastic housing so unless I pry the sensor and bushing out and remove the copper bushing from the sensor I will have to get a new sensor as well. They are like $16 from autozone. ECT sensor I believe.
Thanks,
Rob

Since no one answered the original question. That is one of the two ECT (engine coolant temperature) senders. One (with 3 wires) feeds the PCM, the other (2 wire) feeds the dash.

EDIT: Oh, the Thermostat housing is the problem.

plastic manifolds just plain SUCK
Can you plastic weld the bushing to the manifold?

I have gone ahead and ordered a new wateroutput assembly. The brass or copper threads that the sensors screw into are in a bushing or something that is bonded to the plastic thermostat housing (lower) and I could try plastic weld or something but opted to use my Christmas work bonus :( to buy the part. IF you look at the picture at the top it is leaking around the area where the plastic comes in contact with the brass the sensor is screwed into.

I just hope to h3ll they get the right part this time. :p:

Thanks,
Robbie

HI i have 1 if you still need it .thanks, karl

well, I am taking another car to go out of town. Cancelled my dealer part order for $206 and got a great deal from Karl. Semmed like the most logical way to go. Thanks for the tips guys.
