Are regular fog lights illegal? Got pulled over!

I just called the "Troopers" office here in IL and asked them about the lights and they said (in IL) that it is legal to run only 5 bright (headlight, fog or driving) on the front of your vehicle while on public roads, biways and highways.
"5? Who would have an odd number of lights I asked?" and he said trucks with snow plows and such.
So here in IL you can run with your headlights and fog/driving lights on at the same time, but the fog/driving lights have to be aimed 3" lower than the headlights, is what they told me.

P.S. They wanted my name and address before they would tell me anything... I hope I didn't get myself in trouble or something.

I replaced the 25 watt bulbs in my factory fog lights with 50 watt bulbs and they still barely light up the pavement. As low as they are on my 97 Mountaineer i dont see how the could blind anyone. I also have a set of Hella 500 driving lights. I don't run them in the city but when I went to Omaha in December I used for the whole 200 mile trip. The only person that flashed thier brights at me was a semi-truck driver. Figure that one out.

They probably don't light up the pavement because they are not aimed properly. That would also explain why the semi-driver flashed his brights at you...

Have you checked the aiming on them before?

I disagree that fog lights are only for foggy weather. I use mine a lot because I live in a small town with lots of new housing developments that are poorly lit at night surrounded by unlit farm/ranch land. The fogs are perfect because they tend to shine close to the truck and also wider than the headlights. They have helped me miss a couple of dog walkers/evening joggers who were out after dark. As mentioned before, having them adjusted properly is the key.

As far as the rent-a-cop vs. law officer debate goes, I might be showing my 30-something age, but why tempt them? As my fellow Hoosier once sang "I fight authority and authority always win". --John (don't call me Cougar)Mellencamp.
