Ok guys i need a little help here.

after i put on my 31's i knew that it would throw my speedo off some and i was ok w/that at the time. But now after getting pulled over twice and this time resulting in a $170 ticket i am not ok w/it like i was before.

now ive searched (well tried and failed) to answer my question, but being inexperienced in this part i have no real clue what to actually search. i did find a thread in the tires section about reprogramming the GEM or something, but i have no programmer of any sort or access that i know of right now. (stealership is always my Last Resort, so trying to stay away from there if i can)

my question is what is the best way to get my speedo reading correctly for 31" tires? someone i know said something about changing VSS gears or something of that nature but again, i am inexperienced in this area so im hoping i can get pointed in the right direction.

i have No problem reading so if someone knows a magical word(s) i can/should type in the search to bring up some info that would even be appreciated.

thanks.

Garmin GPS, considerably less than what you've been paying.

I think one of these
speedometer gear
but which one or where it goes i don't know
I remember reading a couple of threads about the different colours
Try a search "coloured gear" maybe

I use my GPS for my speed, mainly because since my gauge swap my tach n speedo stick sometimes.. but when they don't stick I have noticed a small difference up to 5mph. GPS works great.

This is a STICKY in the trans section.

This should answer your questions about your VSS gear.

I believe 98+ have gone away with the VSS gear and use the rear ABS sensor as a tone ring speedo sensor which HAS to be done (re programmed) with a special tool found only at a dealership, high end custom shop, or transmission shop.

If you put 31s on, just got about 4 or 5 under the limit, and you'd be going the limit.
I have 31s too, and my dad's buddy is a cop and I saw him sitting in a parking lot one day and asked him to clock me while I went by going 40, I got back and he said I was doing 44.4, why his radar gives tenths of a mile of an hour I don't know but that's what he told me. lol.

yeah, the best way to avoid more tickets is to reset the computer. If you or someone you know has the right tools (programmer), I have read on this forum that it is possible to go in through the ABS and reset the revolutions per mile, which would fix the speedo/odo problems. Otherwise, I have heard that changing the speedo gears to ones with more teeth will fix the problem, although your odo would still be messed up. The two easiest ways to fix the problem, however, is to either buy a gps or go to the dealership and have them reset the computer to accommodate the increase in tire size, I read that some dealerships will do it for around $80 and others for around $100. My suggestion is to call around to dealerships and see who will do it cheapest, that way, both your speedo and odo will be fixed and you won't get anymore tickets :D

thanks guys..

ahh i did not think of checking that section and it did not pop up in my search. so thanks for the link that should be all the info i need :salute:.

negative on the GPS idea(i can read a map :p:, j/k j/k:)), i'd rather spend the $20'ish and change the VSS gear than spring for a GPS.

thanks again guys, if i need anything else i'll be back but i think the link gmanpaint posted is all i will need.
