I have an opportunity on a totalled front end explorer 2wd with a 5 speed to get the transmission for 250 bucks. I am interested in knowing this...

Year:1999 4 door AUTOMATIC 4.0 OHV engine

What do I need to make this work I have searched but have yet to find my scenario. Will I need driveshafts, xfer case, computer? What else other then the transmission changing my consol around and removing the floor piece what parts will I need to swap this out.. has it been done sucessfully? I already understand I need clutch assembly pedal all that good stuff I'm mainly thinking xfer, starter, fly, shafts? Thanks guys

if your truck is 4x4 then the 2wd 5 speed will not just bolt in / to your transfer case

What will need to be done? what if I pulled it out of a 4 wheel drive?

if you pull it out of a 4x4 then you're golden

You will have to:
convert the back of your engine from flexplate to flywheel
add a clutch pedal and 3 position clutch pedal switch
wire up the clutch switch (wires are there)
get the wiring from the 5 speed truck, transmission harness
computer from 5 speed truck
add clutch master cylinder and hydraulic line

remove your trans cooler system/lines

Your best bet is to get the 5 speed trans and parts from the same year truck as you own
this will make is a plug in conversion as far as wiring goes

thats just for starters keep in mind the 5 speeds are not all that much better then the auto;s

Ok so I cut the floor for the shifter and clutch pedal swap the computer and the get the transmission and i will not need to change drive shafts or my xfer case?? and I kno manuals aren't but I love them and I won't be doin any offroading other then hunting or maybe some .......... so I figured why not pick up 2 or 3 mpg with a standard and get some added power with the diy shifting!

Anyone do this that can give me a rough estimate on time consumption are we talkin couple hours couple days couple weekends?? I did it to my buddies xj and it was like 6 hours but his xfer and tranny boom dropped in 1.5 hours no bullshit in the way like cats and pipes and braces... and all that stuff us ford guys gotta deal with

I will be surprised if your mileage increases. The autos all lock up now, so the advantage of a stick is pretty well gone. A little less mass to turn maybe. But most owners with sticks drive them a little deeper in the lower gears (hence the fun factor of a stick...:D) and offset any possible mileage gains.

I have done this twice with 91's and it's about two days worth. On a 91 it's pretty much plug and play as all the holes and wires are there, you just have to change the trans harness to drivers side inner fender .The clutch pedal setup requires dash disassembly for access and while you have it out change the steering colum to get rid of the auto shifter. There is also a black plastic cover for the gear indicator in your instrument panel you should get form the donor to complete the job.I prefer the 5 speed and it does get better mileage ( about 2 mpg on the highway) than the autos ever did for me.
