My 2002 Explorer Sport 4wd Auto does not fully engage into Park. At first it was only once in a while but now is more frequent. Just like a thousand other times, I Put it into park on a fairly flat lot, took the key out, locked it up, set the alarm and start walking away and I noticed that the truck started rolling away. I did notice a thump, thump thump trans. gear sound and the truck moved in a jerk, jerk motion. Not fun...
I checked fuses, rear lights, shift cable and connections behind the dash, but all seem to be fine. It has now increased in frequency to all the time and is not drivable (parkable that is). Local dealer thinks it needs a new transmission, but I dont think so, except for this problem the trans. performs normally.
Any ideas?

A warning chime will now sound every 30 min. or so for about 10 seconds.

sounds like your parking pin is worn out, take it to a reputable transmission shop and get them to look at it
