Ok Iv'e got a 98 X with the autolamps. A couple of days ago when I started up the X at night my headlights didn't come on. The little light on the mirror came on to tell me the lights are on but no headlights. I looked to see if there is a fuse and couldn't find one for it. Someone please help I love the autolamps And used them all the time.

I do not believe there're any fuses for it. I'm guessing the circuitry of the mirror is starting to go out of the door. Find a mirror on Ebay that looks exactly like yours. There're always some mirrors available there. Good luck!

inside the Steering column there is a multi function switch that has burned out in mine that was the cause if thats not the problem under the center console there is a circuit board the controld the lights and the transmition check that ive replaced both its not that hard

Actually there is a fuse for auto lamp. If you don't know where the fuse box is, it's available when the driver door is open. Left of the steering column.

Well...that tells ya how much I know about Autolamp. I installed one in mine because I didn't have the mirror as it came out of the factory.

In deed there's a fuse for the Autolamp. It's fuse position 9 and 11. But here's the thing, if the Autolamp fuse is blown, then an assortment of accessories might be gone too. Here's a list of what the Autolamp fuse shares with:

Memory seat module, ETAC, message center, cell phone, radio, dimmer relay, and the instrument cluster.

If it's a blown fuse, then some of the the aforementioned equipments won't work either. Plus, he said that the light on the mirror lights up so the mirror is getting power.

Since yours is an XLT, check fuse #9 to see if it's blown since your Explorer doesn't have memory seat, ETAC, cell phone nor the message center. It could also be one of the wires is pinched or damaged in the steering column so that's why the lights won't turn on. I'm not 100% sure though. Double check all the connections and wires for any damages.

Ok guys thanks for the input that gives me some places to start checking. I looked in my manual and it didn't list any fuse for the autolamp but I will check fuse position 9. Thanks again

Any other ideas guys I checked all the fuses and all look good. I have power to the mirror as the green light comes on when the lights are supposed to. I have checked for loose wires and all look good. Im stumped. Any other places I should look? Is there another fuse under the hood for for power to the lights? I searched and found a 98 diagram for fuses and it refers to maxi-fuse #13 which I don't see.

I told you the mulitfunction switch most likely burnt out check that first

wacky GEM

If it's not the fuses the problem could actually be the root...the GEM module that operates many of the electrical functions..I have a 98ltd with wacky autolamps (come on/off at will) it turned out the GEM module was the culprit. Had it replaced and no problems since...but I couldn't tell you how to test it...I'm sure a mechanoic could hook up a tester and determine pretty quickly if it's the gem (generic electrical module).

Do you have continuity at the white and purple wire when the autolamp light is on? If not that would mean your mirror is baffed. If you do have continuity there then I would try to find the relay or relays that control the lighting circuits.

Hoppy.
