Automatic tranny fluid change?

1992 Ford Explorer 4 dr 4.0L automatic. Recently has developed a 1-3 sec delay when shifting from drive to reverse, I have 115,000 miles on it. Seems to shift ok otherwise, I do not know the history on tranny fluid changes. The fluid color is more brown than red. I heard sometimes changing the fluid can do more harm than good, because the new fluid frees up all the crude and that creates problems. Please share any advice, experiences.

Hmmm. Brown T-fluid is not an ideal color. Since you don't know the history of the T-fluid in your truck, there is a good chance that it might be the orginal stuff. The cheapest thing to do in order to help solve the problem, would be to change the T-fluid/filter. Also check out a site that is listed under Explorer Resources (on the front of this home page) and click open the Explorer Maintenance site. Scroll down to speed governor woes. I hope that your problem is a simpleand cheap one to solve. I don't wish a tranny over haul on anyone. If anyone has any other thoughts..please supply them.

my mom had a tranny problem a couple of months ago and it doesnt sound much like what your getting. it started with a loss of overall power and gradually progressed to the point where it would shift at totally inappropriate times and sometimes wouldnt shift at all. have you shifted into reverse lately without stopping all the way (like when backing out of a parking space)?
