hey guys i got a 96 explorer sport 2wd manual, its got 130,000 miles on it i just recently replaced the clutch, my question is what is the average life span of an explorer, if its been maintained properly. i'm thinking about sinking some money into the truck (lift, tires, etc) but was wondering if i should expect the truck to last alot longer, right now the only problems i got is the blend door which i will tackle this winter. other than that she runs good should i expect certain things to go wrong anytime soon?

4.0L will last at least 200,000 unless you're stupid and treat it really bad. The manual transmission like all other V6 Ex trannies are weak reletivly, but take care of that too (synthetics and changed often) and it'll be fine. Some 4.0Ls have gone past 300,000 without major work. Somebody here has one with over 400,000 and still passing emission tests.

There's no shame in putting a couple transmissions in for every engine. Like most vehicles, the body will rust and other nit pick things will wear out before major things which is how good cars eventually get bad care.

The famous thread titled "high mileage explorers" (mileage may be spelled as milage, bot are correct by the dictionary) will help you too

engine rebuild can run $2000 or less if you remove the engine and rebuild it yourself... a tranny rebuild can run $2500 done professionally ( including uninstall and install) with a 12 month warrenty... so reallistically the truck can last as long as the body stays out of rust or as deep as your pocketbook.... but just remember, with a little work you can keep a lot of money...

Pretty sure most 2nd Generation Explorers can last for more than 180,000+ miles with no problems. However, you might have to look into major investments into the car if you don't plan on pampering the Explorer and treating it well. I've taken my car into moderate off-roading as well as just driving the car recklessly (just using engine to the max!). Because of me not treating the Explorer well (for me at least), it has resulted in a completely new engine, numerous misfires, and little nagging and annoying problems. Don't be too worried about the problems that could happen though, treat the Explorer well, and who knows how long it can go...

220000 miles on original tranny and engine its a 94. no signs of slowing down also so i think it would be a wise investment
