Axle Swap

Drats, I was hoping I could get away with it. Thanks for the info!

mr_cribb, I think the 3.73 and 3.27 are more common than the 3.55. One with an LSD would be ideal. Look for axle code 3L73 or 3L55 in your case when hunting in a junkyard.

This should help http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html.

By reading the link it "seems" more LSD rears were equipped w/ 3.73's

It looks like finding a LSD 3.55 will be like a needle in a haystack.... Oh well if at the time when I have the funds if a LSD 3.73 is all I can get, then I'll accept it.

Yea with a 5speed i would get 3.73 for sure.hell i really would go 4.10 being 2wd and 5speed

Interesting suggestion, however since the brick doesn't get awesome mileage to begin with I think the 4.10's would hurt the gas wallet a lil more, than the 3.73's.

With the 3.27's I get 17 & 21 respectively... I figure w/ 3.73's I'd drop maybe 1 mpg or so. But then again it might not change because the engine won't have to work as hard to get up to speed.

Any input on the last statement would be appreciated from anyone that's done this... meaning has anyone gone from these 2 gear ratios and tracked fuel economy?

What size tires do you have?only suggested 4.10 because i see you have some hp mods .also what type of driving do you do?highway or mostly city?that number you posted is what, highway or city?i get 18-20 on highway and i got 4.88s.i can't believe you can get out of your own way with the gears you got but again 5speed makes a big difference

When the current 30x9.5's crap out (this is what I bought it with) I'm gonna go with 255/70/15.

95% city 5% hwy.

LOL yeah it moves out of it's own shadow, I shift between 18-2200 rpm. I let the "torque" do the moving.

the numbers was 17 city and 21 hwy... pretty good for 204k miles.

Being all city i would say you will gain some.you would be very happy with 3.73 and if you want a little more power 4.10 would be ideal but yea it would equal or may drop alittle on highway but it would take a whole lot less gas to get up and that's where you really burn gas not cruising.

OK thanks JD.
