Hi All, Im going to be doing a rear axle swap from a second gen to my first gen to take advantage of the disc brakes for the rear. I have 3.27's in my axle and the axle im puting in has 3.73's. My question is will going to 3.73's hurt my gas mileage much (as it already sucks to begin with)? Thanks

Your going to a lower ratio so it could lower your mpg alittle. But its not very much and there is also a chance that because your lowering the ratio the moter won't have to work as hard and your mpg might stay the same or go up slightly. I wouldn't worry about it get the disc brakes and have fun. But do you know what other componets you need for the disc brakes most say you need the master cylinder and maybe the poportioning(sorry can't spell)valve from the doner vehicle.

If you're 4wd, you will need to re-gear the front diff to. The TTB is reverse cut gearing so the front from a 2nd Gen won't work.

Thanks for the replies. I do have to do some searching and reading to see what I'll need. I remember see something about the master/proportioning valve like you said. I do have 4wd and got lucky and found a 3.73 TTB at the same yard. I'm going to swap the whole pumpkin in so I dont have to worry about setting up the gaers. Hopefuly all will go well. Thanks again.

I have another question. If I were to do an SOA with my axle swap, how much lift would I need up front to level it out? Thanks

hello every body i have a problem with my 91 ex i just change my fuel filter and replaced my gas cap it ran better ,intell today i took off and got around a mile up the
road when it started losing power i smelled gas stuck in the middle of a enter section
i was pushing it to start it started and i quickly pulled to the side off the road i pop the hood and it was raw gas smell ,i figured out the gas coming from a plastic tube when i turn the key it sprays all over the place i tried to replace the rubber connector but when
it start the connector pops off and the truck cut off a lot of gas started coming out the exhaust ,is my problem just the connector ?or do i have a bigger one if gas coming out of the exhaust? and if it just the connector do i need some kind of glue or clamp?

You will also need a master cylinder from a 95 with NO abs and NO proportioning valve.just buy it at autozone or any store so you know you have the right one,it the only MC that will work right at a 100%!!you will also need the intermediate ebrake cable from a 93.all else is a direct bolt in.i love this swap

with rear springs that are decent, front needs to be 5-6"
horrible rear springs, maybe 4". but if your rear springs are that flat id get new ones

Thanks Xeek. The axle im getting seems to have decent springs, still curved, unlike my stock axle/springs...flat and my shackles adjusted to their max.

Thanks jd4242. I currently have ABS but hasnt worked for some time, so I have it disconnected (electricly) and its opperating like standard brakes. Do you for see an issue with that or should I remove it (being that you mentioned I need a none ABS master cylider)?

I have mine disconnected also.in first gen the abs is in the frame rail so you have to use a MC without ABS even if you have ABS on the truck.the proportioning valve is built into the abs on our trucks not in the MC so again you have to get the 95 MC without that also.it is the ONLY MC that will work believe me it is only like $30 new so don't know why people try and use one from the junk yard or rig it up.it is very had to find and identify a MC that has NO ABS AND NO PROPORTION VALVE on a 95 in the junk yard.not all of them came like that

Thanks jd4242. I looked it up here were I live there only $35 new. I will go that route like you said, cheap enough and peace of mind.

JD.... I'd love to do this swap later on as funds become avail.... while looking online at the 3 main parts stores (that I shop at)... AAP(temp down), AZ and Oreilly's I found options listed as NO proportioning valve, No cruise.... it didn't have a listing for no ABS

which one is it... I looked at both w/ cruise w/o PV, and one listed w/o cruise and w/o PV.

Even Napa listed it like this. I'm 2wd... so that's what I was using to look up, if that makes a difference.

Sorry yes its the no proportioning,no abs and no cruise control.even if your vehicle has this stuff.all is in vehicle elsewhere

nope. and ill beat your price!
CARDONE SELECT Part # 132695 on rockauto

i paid $ 45.79 back then. but its on closeout for $26.79, and you dont even have to return the old one for the core.
Shipping Ground (FedEx or UPS) $ 6.66

i still think itd come out cheaper with shipping

Would it make much difference if I were to use an MC with ABS? I picked up a rear axle from a 2000 this morning and took the MC as well.

being a 94 has 4wheel abs, it might change the specs of the mc, but still a '95

will not work.only a 95 with no abs,no portioning valve and no cruse

Thanks JD.... not like my cruise works anyway.... and too lazy to figure out which problem it is.... I suspect the computer for it.

I think I have narrowed down which ratio I'd like to have. 3.55's... I say this because I like the idea of a little more oomph, with very minor fuel consumption. I'd be going from 3.27 if I chose this axle.

I had 3.73's in my old 94 ranger, and it seemed like at 70mph, I needed a 6th gear to compensate for that particular ratio.

This is why I figure 3.55's and my current 5 speed would be optimal.

What is the probability of finding 3.55's and I assume finding one with a LSD would be ideal correct? I asked probability because I have seen axles listed on CL and most were 3.73, one 3.55.

Have I looked in a JY yet, no because I'd get excited when I found one, and there's no point when you're broke.
