Picked up the rear passenger side axle today and now I need to replace it.

I got the axle nut off and from what I understand the differential cover has to come off to remove the snap ring inside. Is this true?

If so, it looks like I have to drop the entire rear and because the cover is bolted to the chasy. Any input/advice. Whoever egineered this thing is a complete mororn...I can't believe how some of the stuff is set up.

no that is not true you do not need to remove the cover/ remove diff housing. follow the picture

instead of using the tool shown you can use a pry bar and hit the end of it the same way you would the tool the axle will pop out . just be careful not to hit the axle seal.

the guy at the dealership wants your money.... They told me the same thing (as I have busted the outer CV Joint in the front passenger axle) Upon further research, all it seems I need to do is what the pic above shows, and either put the snap ring onto the new axle or get a new snap ring (I have no clue which to do as I would think the snap ring with the original axle would be worn/warpped)

Yeah sometimes you wonder about these guys, just like the dealer wanting $620 for a new axle. Why doesn't he just tell me: "come down and we sill sell you a brand new pile of crap".

Either way I replaced the axle and the rear wheel bearing. Tommorow I am doing the front wheel bearings, and it looks like that "should" be a quicker and easier repair as one can only get the entire hub.

Before I pressed the axle stub in to the bearing in the rear, I let it sit in some dry ice. That thing shrunk very nice, and I was able to press it in there without much effor. Nothing like zero impact bearing installs.

Then I have to do the power steering pump...the list just goes on. In the ten years that I have been driving, I have never taken a car in to the shop, and never plan on doing it.

at 620 i agree and i've never taken mine in unless its under warranty.
imho - if they took the 'profit' out and but the 'Service' back in the Service Department they would sell more vehicles and everyone would be happy. . .

How are the Ebay front wheel bearing hubs. You guys ever install them, any problems?

I would save about $250 by getting them from ebay.

i bought a pair for 105 each, still strong after a year. Mine came with new bolts and the ABS sensor.
