Does a 91 explorer have a backup light switch on an automatic transmission? My bulbs are new and backup lights only stopped working. They’ve worked before.

The automatic transmission A4LD has a Neutral Savety Switch, pretty shure that it controls the backup lights too.
If wiring/ground/contacts/fuse are ok, it could be the switch i think.

Anyone know the location of a backup light switch on a Automatic transmission. I have a 91 but do think the tranny was switched to later one from 95-97

It is shown in the pic above you

If they switched to a 95-97 trans then you would have A dtrs on the side of the transmission which is how the reverse light switch, I highly doubt that has occurred as you would also have a 95-97 engine computer

The only picture I see above is a link to eBay for the part not the location of where it would go. Reason I suspect the tranny was replaced is because I just replaced the starter and when I purchased the remanned motor craft starter for a 1991 it didn’t fit flush and caused the flex plate to scrape. I then replaced it with another brand new 1991 starter and and it did the same. I then ordered a 97 starter and it fit perfect. Now I’m having This issue.

What is a dtrs?

The e eBay picture above is the main wiring switch on the side of your 91 a4ld
That is the reverse switch on a 91 automatic

There were 3 different 5 speed transmissions used behind the earlier engines, the 2.9l
In 1991 the 2.9l was still an option so they will list several different starters for whichever 5 speed uou have. There was a toyokogo a Mitsubishi and a Mazda
So when shopping for starters these options will all come up even though they are not correct for your 91 a4ld

There is no way a 95-97 4r or 5r55e automatic transmission will go into your 91 without some major modifications

The 95+ automatics use a dtrs which is a digital transmission range switch, which is the reverse switch on those autos

Your a4ld does not use a dtrs it has the multipin connector
Like shown in the ebay ads above
